Hostiles (2017)

great casting and acting performances, particularly from bale and pike. dude from dazed and confused kills it as well and foster is always a nutter. the story is a bit up and down. you can never tell which characters will die and when. went a bit longer than necessary. awesome cinematography, sets and landscapes. this movie cost a lot to make and nobody went to see it. definitely worth your time, streaming on netflix now. 8/10

Mid 90s 2018
Jonah Hills movie. Pretty sweet. It feels good right? It speaks to a certain something. I like it. There's only so much to say about this one. You gotta feel this one. Or maybe I'm just not feeling articulate. Don't know

Yeah, Out of the Past is really great. Drizz and Bunz are the resident film noir experts here, but I would personally recommend Double Indemnity, The Third Man, Touch of Evil, White Heat and Lady From Shanghai. Watched In A Lonely Place a few months back and I loved the hell out of it.

Terrified (2017) - This paranormal Argentinian horror is full of fun scares and had a really good atmosphere similar to Ju-On. Very impressed with this.

Hagazussa (2017) - The stunning alps is the perfect setting for this creepy tale of a lonely woman loosing her bearings. The acting of the lead is rich and theatrical with great imagery throughout.

Cold In July (2014) - Retro 80's thriller which starts out like Cape Fear and becomes something else entirely which didn't fulfill the early promise this movie had in my experience.

Maps to the Stars (2014) - It's entertaining to watch Cronenberg sneer at Hollywood and Julianne Moore gives a courageous performance which makes the film worthwhile.

The Dark Knight Rises (2012) - This was really underwhelming in hindsight. And yet I enjoyed seeing it again well enough which is a compliment to such a long film. There's just enough going on to keep you entertained yet dissatisfied once its over.

Dying Breed (2008) - Aside from the beautiful location of Tasmania there's not much else to enjoy in this clumsy and at times amateurish survival horror. Someone should send Greg MacLean to the island instead.

The Eye in the Labyrinth (1972) - Rosemary Dexter should have been in more gialli. Shes a joy to watch in this atmospheric and Freudian bikini thriller. One of the hidden gems in the vast archives of Italian madness.

The Nutcracker 2018

Morgan Freeman. Helen Mirren. Kiera Knightley. New chick.

Shits kinda dope even if kinda mangled too. I cried a lot. Obv disneyfied. Duh. And by that I mean like they are making motherfuckers chill on screen and emote so you feel the emotional rays coming through and your brain can capture the image better and shit. Motherfucking lulz. Makes for some clunky shit. But the music was done well and juiced up a little bit in some dope ways. Made me cry though so what's up.

The story was fucking better. Dumb conflict. Considering they had a whole fuck load of good music to fuck with they could have done way sweeter shit. They strayed from the story and barely held the spell together at that point and had they not totally fucking strayed from the old shit the new shit could have been so much more compelling. Expand the music. Cool. Reuse shit. Cool. But don't tell me motherfucking sugar plum fairy is some evil genius from heartbreak etc. Just wack. Motherfucking tin soldiers shut the fuck up. Montage some shit yeah whatever dumb but it wasn't like super wack until they fucked the story up and declined to flesh out that which was fleshed out in the ballet. Winter was dumb royal choice but like let's not nitpick that which is held together with sparkly duct tape..

And really I would have loved a story about her coming back to reality.

But whatever cool musical arrangementz which is why I was there in the first place

Totally fucked up the opportunity to show a face melting intrada though. I'm not gonna say it wasnt dope cause it was but it was so fucking disappointing. They even build the music to it and then drop the fucking ball at the goddamn goal line like all they had to do was give it to Marshawn. Gotta be noted. Fucking moronic. And they had like 2/3 opportunities to drop the beat and walk off.
Never happened. All that planning and coordination for basically nothing

Children of Men (2006)
Been a while since I last watched it, but this has aged like fine wine. Parts of it was almost prophetic with today's world view and events.

Tag (2015)
Another bonkers movie by Sion Sono. Surreal, gory and an entertaining mind fuck.

Stretch and Bobbito: Radio That Changed Lives (2015)
Fascinating doc on the legendary duo. This shit made me feel old and a boom bap dinosaur at heart. Really wish it dug deeper with what separated their partnership, other than Bobbito associating himself with weirdo rap.


Den of Thieves (2018)
Unapologetic fan of Gerard Butler's trashy action flicks, but this was very much a more serious and weightier offering compared to his recent stuff. Felt like a Michael Mann thriller at times. Ice Cube Jr was the weakest element, however. Still enjoyed this a lot.

Deadlier Than the Male (1967)
Campy James Bond style action movie with an unconvincing Richard Johnson as the philandering, karate-chopping hero. Great supporting cast and a fun script by Jimmy Sangster keep this film entertaining throughout. It's an obvious cash grab, but a decent time waster.

First Reformed (2018)
A lot of potential to fuck this movie up considering its heavy themes, but it had me hooked pretty early on. There's a lot of doom and gloom in this and Ethan Hawke's spiral into despair was an emotional journey for me. Paul Schrader's obviously drew parallels to his previous creation, Taxi Driver. Initially, I wished this ended differently, but after sleeping on it, I could appreciate its outcome and felt relieved by its choice. Great movie!

They Shall Not Grow Old (2018)
Not seen a documentary as powerful as this in quite some time. The marrying of archived interviews, additional sound and reworked film really brought The Great War to life. Crazy how boys as young as fifteen enlisted and faced hell on earth in the trenches. Best thing Peter Jackson has done in a long time.

Been watching a bit of stuff from Netflix

The Night Comes For Us (2018) - Perhaps the most hardhitting and violent action film in recent memory. But it lacks the interesting characters and setting of for instance BuyBust, which makes TNCFU a bit forgettable. If you could combine the strengths of each of those two movies you would have the perfect actionfilm I suppose.

Hold the Dark (2018) - Saulnier moves from confined spaces and indie aesthetics to something grand and cinematic, which he pulls of really well. I wish the story was paced a bit better, however. From the shocking scene in the middle and onwards its a really enjoyable genre experience but it takes a while to get there.

Calibre (2018) - This is a quite watchable and competent backwoods thriller set in Scotland.

Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold (2017) - A brief look at one of the great modern American writers and her career and life. Worth a watch for fans but also a bit too shallow and congratulatory to be a great portrait.

Outlaw King - Perfectly cromulent medieval epic, mostly by the numbers - here's your handsome liberator forced to protect his people, here's your evil king and his emasculated sadistic son, here's the strong woman and colorful henchmen who will support your hero on his journey, etc etc. But the production values are high and the acting is pretty good and there are some well staged battle scenes and enough of the blood and mud and heavy armor you want to see in this kind of movie, so it's definitely watchable. Aaron Taylor Johnson surprisingly kinda steals the movie, him yelling DOUGLAS!!!! while cutting down British lords is gonna stay with you.

I haven't read the article about the edits but I actually kinda wish this was longer to give more room for character development. The movie rushes through a bunch of events without spending enough time with the characters imo, which is forgivable considering how much they're trying to cover while still keeping a good pace, but it does leave me wondering if this would've worked even better as a short mini-series or something.

[Comedy Quaddafi]

Suntan (2016) - A lumpy and depressed doctor gets assigned to work on a tiny Greek island. He arrives in the bleak winter but the movie takes place during summer when young, drunk people invade the island. That gets the doctor in trouble before his eventual breakdown in the third act which goes further than I would have expected. This is depressing comedy in the style of the Louis CK show which the movie also references.

Torremolinos 73 (2003) - Cheerful and surprisingly cute film about an encyclopedia salesman who somehow ends up shooting porn with his wife for the Scandinavian market. This was an enjoyable retro meta look at eurosleaze in the early 70's some years after Denmark invented porn. Mads Mikkelsen even stops by to star in the movie-in-a-movie with Candela Pena who I really like.

Shattered (1991) - Just when you're thinking "that's dumb but ok" at the first major twist, the second twist hits you like a hook with the most plotholey and silly ending I can recall. Tom Berenger is fine as the guy who loses his memory in a carcrash but a bootleg Danny De Vito named Bob Hoskins steals the show. Directed by Wolfgang Peterson as well, the Das Boot guy who also made AF1.

Bloodbath (1979) - Dennis Hopper stars as Chicken, a drugged up freak in a Spanish pueblo among drunken expats who are in to black magic. This sounds like an awesome film but it's not, not even as a movie to laugh at because of how amateurish it looks. A documentary about the making of this film would probably be way more entertaining.

Arctic (2018) - Spotless snow survival film. Mads Mikkelsen stars in this movie set in Iceland directed by Brazilian debutant Joe Penna. High emphasis on realism, very tense and enjoyable.

What the Waters Left Behind (2017) - This Argentinian TCM remake showed a lot of promise but didn't fully deliver.

Toro (2016) - Very decent action film set in Southern Spain. A bit formularic and dragging in some spots however.

Burning - if you can hang with the glacial pace that is painstakingly sustained until the last scene, and the ambiguity that keeps the narrative free-floating between a thriller and a social/class drama without fully committing to either, this is absolutely exquisite. The dude from Walking Dead really does deserve an Oscar for this, he's incredibly good.

Widows - Didn't love this, was expecting more based on the hype. It tries to be like 3 movies at once but never finds the right balance between the different elements, and in the end none feel satisfyingly explored. And it's a shame, because individually all the pieces are great and the cast is fantastic. It could've been an unusual serio-comic heist thriller, it could've been a character-driven relationship drama built around a pulpy premise, it could've be an exploration of political corruption through the lens of a crime film, but it doesn't work as all these things at once. There are too many characters, too many ideas that the movie wants to explore or at least mention, whole subplots that feel potentially significant that are established and resolved in the course of 1-2 scenes. It's too much. But this movie is getting so much love I'm almost wondering if I missed something.

Venom - Hilariously bad but does occasionally manage to be legitimately funny on purpose too. Looks a little better once you realize it has more in common with The Mask than with anything in the modern MCU films, not entirely sure if the film makers intended that but it's true nonetheless.

Uncle Drew - For a vanity project based on a commercial character that never really caught on that much, this is pretty great. Hits the right notes you'd expect from an old school sports comedy, has a little heart, and everybody involved looks to be having an absolute blast (that's really the best part of it.) The old players get really into their roles, especially Chris Webber for some reason, and that carries much of the movie. Nick Kroll steals the few scenes he's in too. Just a very pleasant low stakes way to spend a weekend afternoon.

Suspiria (2018) - I'm glad Luca Guido made this film his own and I applaud the effort plus enjoyed the cinema experience even if I think the subplot dragged it down slightly.

Sorry to Bother You (2018) - Not as bad as all of the positive reviews would suggest. There are some moments of true inspiration here and I like the idiosyncratic humor even if some jokes wildly misfired for me.

Ramen Heads (2017) - If you enjoy seeing documentaries about Japanese people who are OCD about making food then this is for you. Forms an unofficial trilogy with the one about saki and the one about sushi.

Guadalquivir (2013) - Cool nature docu about the great river that runs through Andalucia.

Robin Hood 2018

The kingsman dude Jamie Foxx hot brit chick and more. Good cast. For what it is its pretty damn dope and I'm very pleased. No hate here. Cool aesthetic manages to marry some old shit and new shit. Foxxs character is a fucking beast and I love what they did with Robin Marian will tuck the merry men the bad guys etc. The writing walks a line between garbage and passably cool. Considering the kingsman this is no surprise. That's just how the brits are styling their action I guess. The look is cool so I'm cool with it.

The Favourite - I was cool with Dogtooth, hated The Lobster and didn't bother with Sacred Deer, but damn I loved the hell out of this. Starts of as a hilariously acerbic rivalry, then gets at something deeper and darker about love, vanity and social climbing that builds to a pretty devastating final shot. Definitely one of my favorites for this year.

Dog Eat Dog (2017)
I did enjoy Paul Schrader's Lynchian style crime thriller, despite the troughs laced throughout. The cast was great, with Cage actually getting upstaged in the oddball stakes via Dafoe's amazing performance. Really want to rewatch this again.

The Humanity Bureau (2017)
Decent attempt for what's otherwise a by-the-numbers dystopian sci-fi thriller. Budget is a huge problem here, but I think the heavy-handed parallels to today's political climate are also a factor, too. For what's essentially another Cage vehicle, it's way more interesting than some of his other stuff he's done in recent years. No real rush to watch this again, though.
