Cast a replacement for Steve Carell on the The Office

Post by PopeyeJones »

As discussed in the The Office thread, the show is having somewhat of a resurgence this year. It's also Carell's last year on the show. There's some discussion that Harvey Keitel might be a temporary replacement, but no official announcement is being made until next spring. Let's try come up with the best person to take this job (just for the fuck-all of it).

-- Two Categories --

Category 1: Who is the perfect person to fill this role? It doesn't matter if this person already has a gig, or if they're too successful to ever take this job. It can be anybody.

Category 2: The best person you can think of who might conceivably take this role. This can be a television actor/personality who is between roles or on a show that will likely be cancelled, someone already on The Office, or a film actor who doesn't get regular work/no longer gets regular work. These people make the jump to being television leads all the time these days.

My picks:

Category 1: Stephen Colbert (perfect replacement, although it can't happen).

Category 2: John C. Reilly (right now only signed as a supporting role in 1 film in pre-production. After Dewey Cox flopped he's never going to be a lead. He'd still have time to do a movie or two a year between shooting, as Carell has been doing).

^^^^ Was thinking Hodgman too. Keaton is a great call also.

CATEGORIES PEOPLE, CATEGORIES. These both fall in the realm category 2 (could actually happen). I guess possible for it to be the same person for both though.

Not sure his contact with Community but John Oliver would probably be perfect.

If not for his Broadway resurgence I'd suggest Paul Ruebens.

I think it'd be cool if they got a black boss: Samuel L. Jackson comes in and takes NO SHIT from anyone. Has people washing his car.. driving weed out to buyers....

1. I'll agree w/ Colbert.
2. Danny McBride

I don't think it'd be a smart move for either of them - or most anybody else - to take that role, tho.

also really liked the idea of Ricky Gervais when I heard it, but it's probably for the best that it was shut down.

Is that Harvey Keitel rumor for real? That'd work.

I heard the manager from "Flight of the conchords" was in talks. Any validity to this?
On that tip, Jermaine , from FOTC would be fucking awesome.

thought I remembered being surprised by you really liking Cox.

In any case, yeah, Popa with the point. Doesn't matter if you like Dewey Cox or not, it tanked, and it was basically his 1 shot to be a comedic lead. Some steady TV money would be a good move for Reilly at this point, and he could still do the supporting thing in a movie or two a year that he's been doing since Cox tanked. Plus, he'd be fucking awesome in that role.

Andrew Daly could work. They really should just end the show.

^^^ great call on Daly. Would have agreed about just ending the show before this season, but it has been the most consistently funny Thursday night comedy (including the FX shows) this year.

John C. Reilly would be amazing, especially if he was playing a buffoon, because that's where he shines.

My ideal would be Bill Murray. I mean he's too old for the role, and of course he'd never stoop to that level, but he would be the shit, regardless.

Ha. Can't really see NBC bringing back Andy Richter....

Fred Willard is an obvious choice.

I don't know why, but I fucking hate David Allen Grier.

Knowing Bill Murray for a couple years, I know for a fact this would never happen. It would have the worst odds of anyone on this list actually. Vegas would put it at infinity to 1.

Bill Murray has been a real dick about Ghostbusters 3, which is/was being written by the Office writers.

just end the series. some of the suggestions are cool tho..

- danny mcbride
- bob odenkirk
- andy richter
- ben stiller
- bill murray
- ricky gervais

seem all like things that would never ever happen. you could already count ricky gervais out because he said he would never do it, bill murray because he obviously would never do it, andy richter because he already has a job, danny mcbride because he already has a job.. and it just doesn't seem like a job odenkirk or stiller would want.
