World War II Movie Tournament (Nominations Thread)
WWII Movie Tourmanent
Just a short heads-up.
So this is the jump-off for the latest movie tournament. There's a strong number of great to classic movies that belong in the genre, some have only been very loosely touched upon here, so it's about time they get a proper chance to shine. Hopefully some real under-dogs will get some much deserved props.
I'm fully aware there's a range of different genres that have a WWII setting, but I'm really looking out for movies where WWII is a pivotal part of the film, whether it's a crucial mission, a desperate escape attempt or any other obstacle that plays a significant part in the film brought about by the war itself.
A few brief notes.
64 Movies - That's the general goal here. There's a good mix of vocal regular CYE posters and some underrated/less prominent posters who pretty much dropped some absolute gems during the nominations in The Southern Movie Tournament. It all depends on your input here but I doubt we'll even need to shave the brackets and amount of movies down.
Overall Structure - Action/Battle themed movies will obviously play a big part here. I really can't go into massive detail about brackets until I see how much input we get here. I'm hoping to have brackets such as Land Warfare, Naval Warfare, Aeronautical Warfare, Against The Odds Missions, Espionage, Resistance Fighters, Foreign Film/Axis Perspective etc etc.
The nominations will give a good impression of how the brackets would take shape. It was a big headache last time, the mistake I made previously was trying to structure the brackets prior to nominations rather than let the movies fall into their natural place after nominations were over. It should be easier this time round since the tournament's general theme is a lot more specific.
John Wayne - I know that this is primarily a hip-hop site. It's a given some of his films will get nominated here, I really hope this or any other thread does not derail into his personal life and politics here. We're here to discuss movies and not what Flavor Flav said over twenty years ago. Other than the potential of Mindbender gate crashing the place, it's largely a sensible place here at CYE so hopefully we can avoid any kind of potential derailment that ruins any discussion about WWII movies. If you still have a problem with that, shoot me a PM but don't clutter any of the threads.
Nazisploitation - I definitely feel legit PoW movies belong in this tournament, but nazisploitation does not. Kind of insensitive and irresponsible to even include those films that focus on atrocity and humiliation as a form of entertainment for the viewer whereas PoW movies serve a higher purpose of portraying the unbreakable spirit and ingenuity of making do with limited resources.

I'm looking forward to this tournament. I like war movies, but for some reason I have not seen most of them. Hopefully I'll stumble upon some gems (bound to happen).
My nominations:
The Longest Day. Loved that one as a kid growing up. Some great quotables too (Is quotable the movie equavalent of multi's in hiffhoff?)
Saving Private Ryan. No brainer.

Both Inglorious Basterds films aren't really nazisploitation movies. Ilsa She Wolf Of The SS, Love Camp 7, Gestapo's Last Orgy, SS Girls and The Beast In Heat are the kind of titles I was referring to under the nazispolitation moniker that don't belong in the tournie.Andvil wrote:Patton

Great calls btw.
Same. Probably one of the greatest killer cast of actors all in one film.Yohan wrote:The Longest Day. Loved that one as a kid growing up. Some great quotables too (Is quotable the movie equavalent of multi's in hiffhoff?)
Don't know why but the scene with the boots on the wrong way round has always been in stuck in my head more than Mitchum storming the beach or the parachuters getting massacred.
