if you were hbo - whats your next series?

Post by ric »

and what is it about?

i havent seen game of thrones. i probably wont until theyre all out (books and shows)

if i was hbo i would do Shogun, the epic, mind-bogglingly immersive book. when youre reading that book, everything else becomes stuff in your world that you have to do to survive, like eat, and go to work, you get home and read shogun for like 5 hours and then realize you have to eat and sleep before it gets too late.

shogun is about a skilled english merchant-sailor who is shipwrecked out in japan, taken as prisoner, but sort of cared for, and then shit gets incredible from there on out. the story need not be directly ported over but the initial premise and direction and broad strokes would make the sweetest fucking series.

its a shame the hunger games opted to go the movie route. an hbo series could really expand a lot of whats going on there (i havent read the 2nd or 3rd books though). it need only be 3 seasons long.

George R. R. Martin might die before he finishes the series if he maintains his current pace.

Shogun was already made into a mini series, pretty sure it was a HUGE deal when it came out (1980 according to imdb). they had toshiro mifune as one of the leads and orson wells doing narration. HBO would have to shell out a ton of money to match that kind of talent, and tons and tons and tons of money for authentic looking sets - exactly the kind of spending that made them cancel Rome. They would be working under the pressure of expectations of not just living up to the book but the previous version as well.

So while the source material maybe great, the logistics of implementation aren't very promising

I would go with a comedy about the actors who play the plushy characters in a kids show and how fucked up they are in real life.

I have a feeling he's going to pick up the pace now that the HBO series has taken off.

id do a show where a kid is getting ready to go off to college and its his last year in high school. he wants to be criminal justice and his family wants him to stay home and work. the mother is an office manager and the dad is a C.O. and a secret faggot. the kid is super smart and steady shows his peers how stupid and fucked up they are. if it gets picked up, we follow the kid into college where he shows his professors and peers how stupid and fucked up they are too. it'll combination of the boondocks and saved by the bell

"You Don't Live Here Anymore" - A thirteen episode series with each week revolving around a different family in a different city. The title refers to the foreclosures happening at a record rate across the country. Its message would be naturally anti-foreclosure and, because of the subject matter and network, would attract high profile stars. Gayest idea ever? Yes.

Leon Uris has so many great books that would look amazing on HBO. These two books specifically:

@alpha
y the last man would be sick, but i thought the comics had a major dip midway through. lots of good survival potential, sex potential, etc

Some kind of show about indie pro wrestling.

"Preacher."

A raunchier version of "The League." Maybe involving gambling or poker instead of fantasy football.

Anything sci-fi related.

Convince brad pit to give us world war z so we can turn it into a massive 2 season epic with each story as an episode.
