What does this movie mean to you?

Post by Philaflava »

Maybe if this turns out to be a success we can run this theme on here.

This movie encompasses so much of my childhood its ridiculous. People have a tendency to equate Star Wars to this childish sci-fi filled with light sabers, Ewoks, hairy sidekicks, cutesy droids, an impatience pesky Jedi in training and of course the biggest bad-ass ever. To me, it's so much more than that. Empire was not only a dark film for children, it deviated what many sci-fi movies did at the time. The acting will always be what it is in this series, though it's hard not to appreciate the witty banter from guys like Solo, Lando or the cool ass ways of Boba Fett or even Yoda. This movie defined my early years. It's a movie I still watch, still have fond memories of and still has influence on my life. A lot of movies came out in the 80s that were classics, but none as important to me than Empire. You could walk into just about any store today, whether its Target, Wal-Mart, Best Buy or most chains in the malls and you'll find something Star Wars related. It's really the biggest movie brand I can think of. This movie taught me the good guys don't always win. Shit ain't always happy. You can lose a hand if you fuck around, you could even lose it at the cost of your own pops. It also taught me trust no one. You never know when somebody is gonna drop a dime and sell you out for a little poon and peace up in Bespin.

Recently just introduced my 5 and 7 year old nephews to the OG trilogy and now they're obsessed. So much fun getting to watch kids see/love it for the first time.
Makes up for them refusing to watch the Totoro dvd I gave them.

Not much. Never gave a shit about the series once I became a teenager and stopped buying toys. Admittedly, I'm not much a sci-fi guy though.

It's not even possible to make a statement like that. Either it's nostalgic to you and you enjoy it or it's not. What a strange thing to say. You're a really weird guy.

Nothing.

The Star Wars movies, all of them, are not very good. I get that they are important to the film industry and I get a lot of people liked them as kids, but they're shit. Adults need to let this shit go.

I am saying this movie sucks. Without nostalgia everyone would treat all these star wars the same way they do the new 3 movies. But, people jock this movie because they grew up with it.

it's funny how things get popular, and then it's cool to hate when the backlash happens. if you don't like it, that's fine. the og movies are rad. irregardless of the nostalgia factor.

Agreed. And I'm not even a big fan. Never was, really. Plus it's just a really insipid and vapid argument/stance to take. To say something is shitty without nostalgia is on some :naswtf: shit. Think of all the music and cartoons and books, etcetera, that we loved as kids. Is it all trash if you take away nostalgia? Who the fuck know? Better yet, who the fuck cares? Not to mention the fact that it's impossible to take away nostalgia. And who the fuck would want to if you could? Silly fuckers, I tell ya.

we agree on one thing.

yo, when Luke's hand got chopped off and he was hanging on to that railing for dear life, I was legit traumatized as a kid :err:

this movie was gritty and grimy and i felt cold watching it, i always remember it conveying its worlds very impressively :ohhh:

first time i realized a sequel could be a real left turn from its original... even as a kid i was like "yo, this movie is very different" :killacam:

Lando was a cool ass G

I am guessing that if you are under the age of 35, that these movies wouldn't mean shit to you.

The recent trilogy was so bad that it has affected people's perception of the original trilogy.

the original trilogy is not "bad" by any stretch of the imagination.
some of the acting & dialogue are questionable.. but the character/costume design, art, etc. are some of the greatest in the history of film. that alone can't make the movies bad

im 27 and i love this movie. as long as you watch as a kid it has some kinda effect on you. vader=father was the ultimate shaymalan moment. last year i watched it on shrooms with dutch subtitles and i realized it was an actual translation. shaymalan'd again. really ruins the surprise for euro kids tho i imagine.

That's bullshit. I'm in my 30's and some of my favorite movies are from before my parents were born.

Best star wars. But to be perfectly honest the thing this movie represents for me the most is lots of nerd talk that I have to deal with from friends and aacquaintances and me just not giving a flying fuck about 97% of the discussion and having to put up with nerds downtalking me because I don't agree with their assessments on most things star warsian
