Elliot Smith Appreciation Thread

Post by neoteric »

A friend put me up on him a while ago. Great voice, strong melodies. He was really unique...he also died young as most musical geniuses tend to do. he stabbed himself in the heart

heres a collection of 8 or so really good tracks
http://www.sendspace.com/file/b5cngh

he lived that typical bullied heavily as a child thing, joined a band, hated jocks, did lots of drugs, and killed himself

anyways, check out these tracks if you aint up on him

if you are, i aint tellin you shit you already dont know
im just starting to get into him more..got the discography

Elliot's dope.. He lived in my hometown for a grip..
I won't act like i'm 100% up to par on his music.. but I've read a gang of shit about him and heard several of his records.

I've got a verse or two written where I'm trying to talk to him about looking out for other writers as a spirit..
I think the new NME lists him in the top 15 or so of influencial music writers..

I love Elliott Smith. My personal favorite album is X/O, which is also derided as being too "poppy" by his fanbase. The production on there is very heavy compared to the rest of his works, but man oh man, it's got some great songs on there.

I have 3 of his albums. I enjoy them all. I haven't heard anything from his punk band but would be interested in checking them out.

Agreed. He and Rivers Cuomo are contenders for the softbatch emo sissypants award. But Elliot Smith was really good at it. I'm not a huge fan but he's got a handful of great stuff.

I have to be in "that mood" to really appreciate an elliott smith record.
they are all pretty good.... but then there's times where and elliott smith song is perfect.
his cover of Big Star's "Thirteen" is really good too.

I forgot to add that stabbing yourself in the fucking chest is very, VERY un-emo.

As far as ways of committing suicide goes, I'll agree... however, committing suicide in the first place is extremely emo. What's even more emo than that? :reason: threatening to but not having the juevos to walk the walk.

He also attempted suicide by jumping off a cliff. Folks who dismiss his music because it's "emo" are probably closet cases. Nick Drake was emo too, so what? Him and ES just happened to be better at it than all the dorks who gave that title a bad reputation.
When we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality -- judiciously, as you will -- we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.

Can someone name a musician who isn't emo?

If he screamed constantly about some nonsensical bullshit while playing monotonous off-key riffs would that be less emotional?

...I don't even like the dude that much either.

Agreed. I hate that term almost as much as people who use the term "butthurt."

i dont enjoy heat miser (ES's band) nearly as much as any of elliotts solo efforts... but it isnt that they arent good, its only that the particular sort of punky rock they play isnt my cup of tea, i simply would rather hear the folky acoustic sound elliott has.

cop and the speeder is probably my favorite heat miser album

The coolest Elliot Smith song I've heard so far is "Needle in the Hay". I have had the self-titled and XO for a while and have listened to them passingly...good stuff but I wouldn't say he's an incredible artist or anything. That might change once I listen to his music a little more intently.

^ do you have winzip? just right click on the folder you have the mix in, go to winzip and then "add to "ayentee's elliot smith mix.zip" which will zip it up..then go to sendspace.com and browse to wherever you saved the file and upload it. It's really simple.

One of his better songs isn't on any of his albums. It's called "Miss Misery," and it's on the Goodwill Hunting soundtrack. Check it out.

Very talented guy with a lot of problems. It's too bad he could never get his life together. He was a perpetually recovering drug addict.

the scene in the royal tenenbaums where richie attempts suicide with 'needle in the hay' in the background seriously gets to me.

i don't have the mp3s on here for some reason, but i think either/or is his best work and a must for people who want to hear more. i'm sure i could track it down if people are interested.
