Ratatouille
Yes Ratatouille is still a cartoon and all the elements that attract the "cartoon" audience are here. But for the first time in this new generation of CGI created worlds have I ever walked away thinking I just saw a really great film. Pixar has come along way from Toy Story and this new installment leaves you wondering where they will go next, the craftmanship is impeccable from the foggy Paris nights to the sopping wet garbage boy linguini who sits, held down heavily, from the dripping uniform that dangles all around him. In a seemingly minor shot, a tilt down from the top of a paris apartment complex to a shot of our main hero parading down a paris street no longer afraid to hide in the shadows of the rodent world, I found myself really wondering if the building was real, until the site of our hair covered hero I was almost sure it was. For all the wonderment in the visuals the true depth in achievment comes from the exploration of thematic emotion. While watching Ratatouille I've never felt more human, or rather I've never been so aware of the human condition in today's culture. How we as humans live to criticize, we are so much more open as a society, and never has it been so easy to express ourselves but from this freedom comes vulnerability. How our expectations of how things should be in family, in relationships, in restaraunts don't necessarily have to meet convention, or if you really knew, rarely do. Peter O' Toole as the critic Anton Ego is brilliant and the film never really hits on all cylinders until he appears. The final 5-6 minutes are perfect albeit a little silly. When the Kitchen finally hits its potential you can't help but be grossed out and laugh a little at how rediculous the premise is. The heart of Ratatouille lies in Anton Ego, and however funny it is, when he first takes that bite of Ratatouille and we see his flashback we see ourselves, and whatever emotion you felt, or whatever flashback you saw, you are left realizing that Ratatouille is more than another pixar children's movie it is a milestone in the art of filmmaking.

surprised this is the first CG movie that you thought was great
to me this stands out from the rest there is more depth in Ratatouille then there is in any other pixar film. Oh and I didn't even read your post in the "what movies did you watch today thread".

NO NO NO NO NO....Ratatouille is on a completely different level...I'm telling you, it is unlike any other "cartoon" you will see...Even happy feet which touched on social/enviromental issues doesn't compared to what Pixar has done with Ratatouille...
and yes I love the Incredibles, maybe I didn't make it clear enough, this film is something different, it is like a really good romantic comedy with more emotional and character depth.... It can't be compared to other animated films, if it were to win an award it should run against live action films...
i can understand completely where youre coming from, but i havent seen any of the previous 3 or 4 penguim movies (on purpose) to compare it to.Icesickle wrote:DudleyDawson wrote:surfs up was pretty dope.

If Surf's Up was anything like Happy Feet I strongly doubt that.
And Incredibles is a top 20, maybe even top 10, film of this decade.
but i think they took an innovative angle a la the incredibles.

Went to a 10:00 PM showing last night with my girl last night.
Didn't like it as much as The Incredibles, but it still is a great movie - 8.5/10.
Like Trademark said the animation in this movie is probably the best animation I've ever seen; it's so lifelike it's uncanny. The action scenes - the ones in the kitchen and when Remy is trying to survive the sewer rapids - are amazing, and the "important" moments that Bird sets up, like when Remy sees Paris for the first time, are sublime.
The one problem I had with it is that Linguini is such a schmuck that I lost interest whenever he talked or was on screen. I know, he's supposed to be a schmuck, but at least he could have been an interesting character. Remy, Remy's dad, Gusteau, Anton Ego, the chick, and Skinner are all well-written characters, but Linguini just falls flat.
