Slug vs. El-P

Post by Philaflava »

Since the last poll was a complete blow-out, here is one that maybe a bit closer.

Both PF posters, though one is slowly creeping to HLB status with his zingers and uncontrollable late-night babble. The other one doesnג€™t show face much unless itג€™s a thread about him or his projects.

One shouted us out on Kimmel, the other just appeared on Kimmel last night, but I donג€™t think we got a shout-out 

Both have done contests on PF, so I guess you could say theyג€™re supporters. One is notorious for his lady troubles the other for his label troubles.

Both are indie superstars and very good business men. You could argue both have a classic album under their belt (Lucy Ford/Funcrusher Plus).

One would rather be mouth fucked by Nazis, the other would rather mouth fuck Employee (I think).

Okay, now vote!

I have to give to to Slug here.

I never bought into either of their hype for a long time, but when I listened to You Can't Imagine.. and I'll Sleep When You're Dead and thoroughly enjoyed them both I went back and listened to all of their stuff and I enjoy the Slug/Atmosphere stuff more. I really don't like Funcrusher very much, that style of hip-hop just doesn't do it for me. I also don't really enjoy El's first solo, I guess it's too "abstract" for me, or something. On the other hand, I really like all the Atmosphere stuff I've heard.

That's just based off their MC skills though. I mean, El-P makes some crazy beats and has produced some certified classics (Cold Vein) and some great more recent records (Hell's Winter, etc) which are far superior to anything I've heard Slug produce (if he even produces anymore, or ever did a lot?). Plus they are both indie superheroes, starting their own labels and bringing them to huge underground/some mainstream recognition. I think Def Jux generated a little more interest generally now, as Atmosphere is the only truly well recognized group out of RSE (shameful in a way, others deserve it).

It's a tough decision.. as you said, both are great businessmen and indie allstars, really doing their part to shape the underground rap scene... but if you ask me, I'd rather listen to some Atmosphere than an El-P album.

well, although they both are labeled "hip hop" they make very different kinds of the same music. I'm voting slug because his music is much more approachable...I could go on and on and compare and contrast but what I'm basing my vote on is if I had a friend over and wanted to share a few beers I'd throw some Slug on...

voted EL-P because his shit knocks harder and he keeps reinventing himself sonically while slug, even though he's dope, plays it safe most of the time and raps over smooth beats about girl troubles and stuff, while El-P spits that grizzly paranoia and every one of his albums sounds like he took 20 years off his life making it.

so yeah, Laserface all the way.

Slug knows an old friend of mine so, he's pretty much good in my book. EL-P sold me on a Fantastic Damage hat.....he's a damn good salesman. So this was a close one.

Everyone talked about the music and I think they both have good music. I just recalling other shit from when I met them both. Shit wasn't funny though so, nevermind......

El-p's shit does not knock harder than Atmospheres.

Atmosphere uses actual 808s and almost gangster basslines that bang in the trunk.

El-p's shit sounds muddy and doesnt hit in the car at all.

Overall, El-P

Fan Dam. Released with the only song that can still give me the chills after hundreds of plays.

As a poetic lyricist, I'd give it to slug, tells a story like no other.

I really cant decide on this one. Slug's older material is some of my favorite underground hiffop around but currently El is making better music.

Not even close for me. And I like Slug. But El-P's influence on a lot of indie shit is absolutely undeniable.

Are we supposed to gauge this on rapping alone, or on total musical contributions? 'Cuz if it's the latter, I don't know how Slug is winning this.

Sorry Seannie boi, as I said in the other thread, I will listen to your music when other people have it on, but I've never bought or downloaded anything of yours. I used to be an El-P fanboy though. That is, until all of his beats turned into a sine wave and white noise with drums under 'em.

On second though, maybe I should have went with Snail?
