I don't remember anybody in the 90's being mad because Paul Wolfowitz is getting in the way of their righteous left-wing revolutionary cocaine sales
But i do remember that a decent amount of politically-themed music, rap or otherwise, has ALWAYS been reactionary, poorly informed and pandering to generations looking for a cause in an uncertain time. For every Marvin Gaye, Bob Dylan and Chuck D, there's always been dozens of Immortal Techniques.
Also suggesting hypocrisy because I might have enjoyed something similar in the 90s implies that at 27 I should have the mentality of a teenager. For this to hold any water means I have learned NOTHING in the last 14 or 15 years, that my development stopped somewhere around 93-96. Is that how you two feel about yourselves, that your understanding of the world around you hasn't improved since middle school (assuming you're around my age of course)?
i don't look for my political enlightenment in rap music.
but i do like to see political rap being made. its actually one of the reasons i started listening to rap. there is an element of nostalgia to it for me for sure, but at the same time immortal tech is a real good mc. which is why i will listen to his shit at age 31 and enjoy it. like i said, i'm a huge skeptic. i don't believe or agree with what he has to say 50% of the time, but i'm glad this type of music is being made. it will give the younger generations different shit to listen to instead of the generic drivel pumped out on the radio. i can't see that being a bad thing.
and to the guy making the adidas/airforce 1 analogy. that would almost work if there was a subgenre of hiphop that was only about shoes.
I think the point most ppl missing, is that its not his music that turns so many ppl off, but his pompous arrogant, full of shit , psychotic additude he always displays. I doubt actual established artists really like his ass. I remember on some radio show's anniversary show they had hella emcees doin freestylez back to back, and one of the dukes from The U.N. Was gettin busy, then all u heard was IT cut him off mid sentence then u heard him say some shit to IT, like what the hell, but IT didn't respond and just kept flowin.

really?
are you a socialist
you're from edmonton right? you and your economy exist because it is expedient for oil companies to allow you to.
socialism is a bad look everywhere but especially when you are posting on a tuesday morning from a computer job in one of the most oil-rich regions of the world
you are correct. i'm lucky to be in a city/province with a strong economy. we have tons of oil in alberta.
but i never said i'm a socialist and i'm not sure how this relates to immortal techniques music in any way.
i knew the over on this thread was 3 pages by noon.
also it brings me some sadness to announce that hustle crowe told me he retired from again. at least he won the snowgoons contest during his brief return.

Nice essay, drizzle.
So from you're saying is that, you have a problem with the artist and not the message, correct? I more so mean the message; not liking artist.....thats always personal preference. If my development stopped somewhere between 93-96, I would still rag on the idiots who got robbed their Starter coats .

Somebody made a Canibus VS. Aceyalone VS. Immortal Technique thread where, predictably, most of the posters respectfully chose Canibus and Aceyalone. The thread was only 6 replies deep with 1 reply comparing an Immortal Technique song entitled Obnoxious to some sub-Necro shockcore before Technique appeared :
Immortal Technique wrote:See this is what happens when someone expresses their favorite opnion about an MC, then people who dickride their fav artists have to come in here and talk shit.
LOOK FAGGOTS.
You can express your like for your boy over me without talking shit about me. Do you understand that simple concept muthafuckas !??!!?!
And to take a song like Obnoxious the least positive least about anything song and compare it Aceyalones deepest abstract rah rah that you are sucking on doesnt make sense. Or Canibus' 90's classics. That just doesnt make sense, pussies.
Listen to the whole album before you talk shit.
And I would like to make something clear, while I will stomp a rapper the fuck out no matter who you think you are or what screen name you hide behind. I never bring it to people for no reason, I play cool and I am down to build with anyone. I would never compare myself to Canibus, we are from two different times when the stakes were different and labels were trying to being the man down. I have nothing but respect for him for lyrically making the game step up...Getting hated on still making good records and Aceyalone and all the rest of the cats brought up.
I don't need to floss my intelligence like it was a watch or chain I worked to acquire, that defeats the purpose of focusing my energy on things in the first place, faggots. I am honored that people like my music and that I am more independent than all these cats who fly the fuckin flag and have none of those aspects.
People here are very pleased that I got the HipHop quotable in the source this months. They are glad that even with my distribution cut I managed to move the album and more importantly the MESSAGE which is in just about every song except Obnoxious. AHAHahAH
How about I do a song with Canibus, Aceyalone and Sage Francis and all of you calm the fuck down. If not, come holla at me in the streets and we can settle this face to face, pussies.
But for real, next time you like someone better than me you really don't like to come at me to express that, faggots.
Immortal
Technique
Ps. I lived in Harlem since before you were born so I 'settle shit on the block'. Not at the neighborhood 7-11, not in the meadow park, Not afterhomecoming dances, not at skating rinks, and NOT behind bleachers with gym teachers like you. Fuckin' homos.

See what you did here, you steam rolled any subtlety and nuance in what i said to simply call me a hater - very analogous to what IT does with complex political themes. He reduces them to simple easily palpable one dimensional trivialities that suggest that the current mess can be resolved with similarly easy answers and acts of vaguely political violence. Balzac suggested that it's good to have at least somebody like him around, but is that the influence you want passed to the kids who might actually take him seriously? Is this what you want to leave behind, a legacy of poorly informed mediocrity where everybody gets a hug and a gold star for trying?

So wait.. you're saying Immortal Technique=Paris? Were you around then?
i was
and i own all paris albums, and have heard all immortal techs albums.
u?
So you consider immortal a legend? You compared him as well to Cube and PE, i have all of Chuck's albums save for maybe a few in between 96-00 and the most relevant of Cube's. My sampling of IT, I wouldnt rate them as exactly the same thing. no, I don't own all of paris's album...but we're both dealing from a subjective opinion arent we? I just find that interesting....
Sounds like everyone should start whipping out lyrics for comparison, ammended with relevant political texts and news clippings. Only way this gets settled...seriously.
idn if i believe he got his ass beat at fat beats, his entourage is like 20 black dudes from harlem every time i see him, im just saying even if he won i doubt all his hood friends are just gonna watch, poison pen woulda dropped him rofl

Drizzle, c'mon now, no one called you a hater. Chillax, killer. Thats shit is on you if you feel like you're a hater. I didn't even say that. Notice I said.....personal preference, drizzle, my boy.
To a certain degree, Balzac has a point. The truth of the matter is that it goes a step further when people who actually listen to the music to research what he says in his lyrics. Thats personal responsibility to know about the information that you're listening when facts are being thrown out there; but obviously we have those who run with what they have and take it as truth always. I know what you mean, drizzle.....but I'm viewing this differently (gold stars and hugs are ghey though ).

no, i don't consider him a legend. i just think he makes the same type of music as paris and other militant rappers of the 90's. angry, anti establishment, anti cop etc...
@ drizzle , i'd rather have kids listen to IT to spark some sort of independent thought. give the kids some credit, they won't believe it just cause a rapper says it. i know i didn't when i was a kid. but the fact that i even heard controversial rap did open my eyes and got me thinking a different way. we need that type of shit in hiphop, and unfortunately for most of you guys IT, dead prez, sabac, nyoil and maybe a handful of others are the only ones doing it. you might not like it (fair enough), but its not necessarily a bad thing for hiphop as a whole.
