Technic 1200's and 1210's = R.I.P. (apparently false)

Post by Verge »

Well, I figure this is the best place to post this being there's likely more
turntable owners here than anywhere else on :phila: .
Sad, sad day for teh vinylists.
They're gonna stop production on the 1200's and 1210's next February.

And I NEED A PAIR!!

:owens:

http://www.thedailyswarm.com/headlines/ ... and-1210s/
The DJing community and the greater dance music scene mourns
the loss of a clubbing staple today. No, Steve Aoki hasnג€™t hung up his
record bag, but rather news has emerged that iconic turntable
manufacturers Technics will be stopping production on their universally
loved Technics 1200s and Technics 1210s.

In a statement re-posted on dance board Global Hardstyle, the company
behind the production of the Technics turntables Panasonic announced that
they would cease the manufacture of Tehcnics turntables in February next
year, citing an increasing decline in sales as the motivation behind the
lineג€™s demise.

The Australian arm of Panasonic issued a similar statement today,
expressing their disappointment that the brandג€™s 35 years-and-running
legacy was to be put to bed.

ג€œIt is a sad day today but due to low sales globally in analogue turntables
a decision to stop production has been made on Technics Turntables,ג€
Panasonic spokesman Ian North explained. ג€œFor Australia this means we
will receive our last shipment in March.ג€

Pocket Lint:

Weג€™ve seen a couple of reports on message boards that seem to indicate
that the iconic Technics SL-1200 and SL-1210s may be about to be
discontinued. If true, it would be a surprise, as both models represent
iconic turntables and are widely considered the industry standard in
nightclubs.

The rumours appear to originate from a New Zealand DJ shop called DMC
World, which says on its product page: ג€œPanasonic (the manufacturer of
Technics) have announced that production of the world famous Technics
SL-1200 and SL-1210 DJ turntables will stop at the end of February
2010ג€
.

The turntables have been around for more than 35 years, and are
featured in the London museum of Science and Technology as an
important step in how music has been played and presented over the last
century. Their popularity has ensued due to their tank-like construction,
high torque and effective insulation from acoustic feedback.

Damn, I really need a pair, too.
Could never afford them shits.

I finally got a pair for christmas when I was friggin 19, from my Grand pops
who was dying and spending money frivolously.
3 months later my ass was on a Greyhound, on my way out of state with
warrants, one Technic, boxes of tapes(around 300-400), two crates of
vinyl(not in crates, but in 1 of those mad strong beach chair material
laundry bags, shit was heavy),and one change of clothes. And a bag of
weed which I wound up almost choking on when there was a random
checkpoint search and I tried to swallow the bag of weed. It got stuck in
my throat :pause: and luckily by the time we got back on the bus, I was
able to basically puke it back up and smoke in various states we drove
through.

Years later, when everything was said and done, I had the 1 Technic left.
I was kinda houseless at the time, moving from friends houses to motels
and all that and had the turntable in the trunk of my car.
I wish I woulda took a picture. Maaan, this shit was all types of fucked up.
Unfixable. One corner of it was actually curled up.
I know, wtf, but it's true.

I got my first pair in 95 and had them until like 2001 when I ran into some financial problems and had to sell them along with all my records that I had been collecting since 91 ish. Fucking heartbreaking.

I just copped the ones you see in my previous post last year around this time from this kid who was a house music DJ. Mint condition, never taken out of the dudes house, with the receipt from 2004. $400 for the pair. I was fuckin thrilled. Now I am going to have to find another pair, because I don't ever want to be without a pair.

Yeah, 97/98 for me.

Gotdaaaamn. I feel you though. I've taken some pretty big losses in the
vinyl/cassette department too. It really is just gut wrenching.

That's a sweet deal.

Forget about tapes, I don't even want to talk about all the tapes I have lost over the years. I had a bunch of sneaker boxes and blunt boxes full of tapes in my parents storage after they moved and my mother ended up throwing out like 90% of my tapes. Ugh..

I still got one Dutch box with a few tapes. Going to rip the whole Stretch show when Big L and Jay freestyled for The Big Sleep one of these days, hopefully over my Christmas break.

With all the business they will be doing between now and February, I wouldn't
be surprised if they change their mind and keep selling them.
I hope so.
I mean, does Panasonic really have that many other big sellers in their catalog? They got them "Viera" tvs, but...

And holy shit! Last time I saw, I guess it must've been a few years ago,
Technics were $550 each, and I thought that was alot cause they were
$400 at one time.
Now, $750. :ohsh: Unless that's for a pair, which I doubt.

I guess it was inevitable.

I am actually surprised that 1200's have remained the solid mainstays of DJ's around the world for so long. Even after Vestax, Gemini, and the others started making ones with more powerful and diverse features (wider pitch control, reverse play, detachable rca connectors, etc.) I was always pleased to see most DJ's still running the 1200s.

Maybe I got this wrong, but I remember the story was that Technics held the patent on the direct drive technology for many years so no one could make anything even close, and then the patent ran out some years backand Vestax and everyone else jumped into the game. Anyone know the real deal on that?

The other rumour way back was that they were going to discontinue these a long time ago because it was the only remaining item that they still made out this one particular plant. But the demand kept that one plant alive. (Sounds kinda far-fectched to me.) Anyone ever hear that one?

Hopefully the used market on these, won't be too jacked. My advice would be to hurry and pick em up from some poor fool who hasn't gotten this news yet.

I'm gonna see if I can keep going with mine. My joints are 20 and 17 years old and they are still going strong. They don't make electronics like that anymore. Nowadays its just that cheap planned obselescene crap.

It'll be interesting to see how the other companies will adjust to fill the market for this.

I actually heard that it's for certain countries where the turntable not sells good. Maybe it's a publicity stunt to sell more turntables :)

That's possible. I was saying this to my girl earlier.
I mean, imagine how many turntables they're gonna move between now and
March. A LOT.
And it was only announced out of what, New Zealand? I don't know if
that's where their headquarters is or what.
But I'm paranoid like that, so don't take my advise on things
like this. lol

The guy from Australia retracted his statements:
Regarding an email I sent last week regarding the end of manufacture of Technics turntables.

We have had a misunderstanding in communication with the factory and my original email is incorrect.

Panasonic will continue to manufacture and supply Technics turntables for the forseeable future.

We regret any problems this may have caused in the meantime.

All this e-hype... I won't believe it until I read an official statement from Panasonic Japan.

Hey Ho1o, let's get married. There's only one condition though, you have to sign a pre-nuptial agreement with me to ensure smooth transfer of half your crates when you eventually leave me for being an impossible prick.
