I have not seen an episode of the wire
and i just got the boxset for my bday from my gf.
i know, mad
but based on recommendations from here i'm about to start watching the entire series.
what can i expect? is it really that good?
which seasons are your personal favourites?
are the seasons related at all or totally separate from each other?
on a scale from 1 - 10, how jealous are you that i'm getting to see it for the first time ever?
thank you.

Seasons are related, but not always directly. Definitely watch it in order. Seasons three and four are by far my favorites, but a lot of people claim season 1 too. Imo season 2 is underrated, but still not as good as the other three. Season 5 is still good in many places, but MUCH more didactic than the other seasons (think Aaron Sorkin).

It's the best tv show ever and I don't like any dramas or cop shows.
Season 4 > 1 > 3 > (2 = 5)
Dont know if Blu-ray will ever happen. While it was shot on film and the first couple of seasons were framed for 16X9...Simon has said that he started to like the gritty feel of SD for the show and even started framing for 4X3.Tommy Bunz wrote:Not much else needs to be said. Enjoy it.
Still pissed off that HBO hasn't given us blu-rays of this shit yet.

season 2 hate is unwarranted and mostly stems from the fact that season 2 focuses on blue collar crackers
i dare any of the detractors find any faults with season 2 on the level of plotting, acting, characterization, or how it fits overall into the larger picture that the show creates
i'd rank them as
4
1=2
3
5

To me it's:
4=2
1
3
5
The only reason Season 1 is below 2 and 4 is because the production value of the first couple of episodes feel like what they are, pilots. Season 3 is just short because of the implausibility of Hamsterdam, which wouldn't drag down a normal show, but since this show takes such pride in being so true to life it always throws me off.
Season 5 is a notch below the first four seasons, but is still essential viewing. The final episode is probably my favorite Wire finale.

Nicky listening to the Stooges, whiggas, The Greek and Vondas (the two greatest criminals in the show), the Russian henchmen, tv's White Ice-esque idiot-savant Ziggy, and McNulty's trip to the whorehouse - if you don't like season 2 then please fuck off back to watching Lost or Entourage or CSI.
The Wire has been totally ruined for me by over enthusiastic newjacks trying to tell me - ME! - about it, though.

Season two diehards are worse than the noobz you're referring to. It's not a bad season, but it was a huge departure. Watching it now is far more enjoyable than when it aired originally.I Drive A Lexus wrote:
