roc marciano

Marcberg sounds so much better in the whip than in the home system. Also, I love raw dark hip hop as much as the next guy, but the production on this album gets old. The beat is either sizzling or average. Raw Deal, Snow, Don Shit...those are fire. But a few snoozers too imo.
I also just heard Roc is doing an album with Madlib.

This album grew on me A LOT. Now I can say the only songs that are remotely average are Whateva Whateva, We Do It, and Ridin' Around. Whereas previously I said the beats on this album get old, the exact opposite is true; it has significant replay value. Shit knocks so hard, and Roc is one of the best MCs at the moment imo. He has a dope flow and hits you with various images and whatnot while boasting in a sly manner. Great album top 5 of the year easy.
This grew on me a lot too. The album has a lot of filler, but there's not many artists putting out tracks as good as "Pop," "Snow," "Don Shit," and "Marcberg." Revisiting albums cause of a latent Pitchfork co-sign ftw.
I like how he sneaks in little details into his rhymes that distinguish them from other street rap, eg, how he says "dead broke...in a pea coat" or talks about creeping with girls who play clarinets. The only problem I have is that these idiosyncrasies, coupled with his flow, often remind me a little too much of Raekwon and on some songs the resemblance is too much ("Marcberg") that it comes off like biting.
Overall though, the guy's a great MC and great beatmaker, and the 4 songs I mentioned above are the best NYC street rap I've heard in a while besides Meyhem Lauren's "Got the Fever," some tracks off OB4CL2, and most of Cormega's last album. I slept on this hard because, like aeokq said, I was listening to a bunch of tracks on headphones when it first came out and hadn't given it a proper bump in ze whip.

Dammit, now I have to hate Marcberg.Icesickle wrote:This grew on me a lot too. The album has a lot of filler, but there's not many artists putting out tracks as good as "Pop," "Snow," "Don Shit," and "Marcberg." Revisiting albums cause of a latent Pitchfork co-sign ftw.

I never understood when people use to say that an album was made for the walkman (portable cassette player for you 15 yr olds), I just assumed they meant it didn't bump in the system.aeokq wrote:Marcberg sounds so much better in the whip than in the home system.
I first heard Marcberg on my ipod, and it sounded fine, dusty but fine.
It sounds like shit in my car though. I'm not expecting it to hit, but it sounds really funky, like it wasn't mixed right or something.

Take it up with Gloss, you White Piece of Shit.
hold up he said Whateva Whateva & RIDING AROUND are (remotely) average? ...you can maybe argue that for Whatever, but Riding Around is one of the better joints to me. def one of my most played albums this year and it'll still get play thru the winter while a bunch of other shit gets retired til the weather breaks again

Nah man, your time is precious. Don't let something like a cursory listening experience get in the way of making your claims.Icesickle wrote:Maybe I need to listen to it more, but the four songs I mentioned stand out from the rest of the album primarily because of the beats.Philaflava wrote:A lot of filler?
No filler on here at all. One of the best rap albums in years, imo.
I gotta give Ithe some extra dap though cause of this: I hadn't peeped this thread since before he gave his little review here. I was bumpin this album once again in the whip the other day and I honestly was thinking that Roc and Rae should do a collabho album together cause of the minor similarities. But I wouldn't call it biting at all. Complete different flows, styles, I think they would complement each other nicely.
