Verse interpretations from songs that confused you
Certain songs contain regional slang, regional references or just some passe' shit nobody understands. Here in this thread we'll break down songs that might confuse others. A verse that might be interpreted in mulitple ways to the each different listener. A friend of mine from NY a while back loved Goodie Mob and thought that "Goodie Bag" was the best song ever but his only problem was that he didn't "understand what fuck they talkin' bout sun!" so i ran through the first verse which confused him the most which went like
Cuz', you know me, givin' me left hand dap
("When you greet your folks never shake with the left hand or dap with the left hand")
P-funk be ridin' shot gun escort your window broke out son
A cool breeze got my lips chap
("Homie rides in the passenger side, Car window busted out cold air chaps lips self explanatory")
mornin' slap some Soul in my bread basket gap contain "X" marks the spot.
("Eat some breakfast there's work to be done")
twain, O.C. the cut layin' a stew of empty gas in my tank
A buck thirty lookin' ugly - think, but it ain't gonna stop no show
("We always had an arguement over this line.....I thought he was referring to a Cutlass. Either way he's referring to to putting a $1.30 in his gas tank and still continuing to his destination")
Ol' burd puttin a buzz in you ear
"It's gonna snow" or maybe perhaps sleet
("His mother is informing him that it's going to snow and/or sleet. A couple of old heads i know in the South refer to their mom as "Ol' Burd")
Rap up the beat outside barely made it to your wake
Lookin' like Mr. Fisher, dickie down no suit, no tie
("Hurried to my best friend's (King Bean most likely) funeral not dressed formally, dressed in a Dickie Suit")
Niggaz ain't gonna be able to just get by no mo'
You leavin' the hotel - 254
("In the early mid-to late 90's when a lot of Miami niggaz set up shop in ATL the drug game got fucked up and also R.E.D.D.O.G. Units in Atlanta were shutting everyone and their momma down , and as for 254 that was the address of the Corrections Detention Center on Peachtree Street....254 Peachtree Street")
At least that's how i understood and took it line for line. Feel free to add on......oh yeah Nas is a Gun and Pharoahe Monch is a pressure cooker.

I grew up with it and it still weirds me out.Thun wrote:I'm not convinced they have it straightened out either.drizzle wrote:the west coast cock/pussy thing threw me for ages
Also, I've been told that in I Wish Skee-lo is using Leyoshi as a metaphor for Post WW II global economic market expansion, and the ultimate failings of this assumption given an impending Malthusian reality. Discuss.

For me to even be partially O.K. with that i had to hear it from a lot of Old dudes over like 50 from the South and The West. Damn near every Rudy Ray Moore/Leroy & Skillet album he refers to pussy as "cock" also,Thun wrote:I'm not convinced they have it straightened out either.drizzle wrote:the west coast cock/pussy thing threw me for ages

it explains his difficult relationship with Ms. Badu which turned him from a classic dropping emcee into a green tea bleeding patchouli whiffing hoe-ass-nigga. H.E.R. stands for (Humming Erykah's Rectum) because if you noticed he stopped doing his high voice gimmick after "Can I Borrow A Dollar", it wasn't because his style matured it was Erykah's PCP laced booty cheeks altered the saratonin levels in Common's brain....after a weekend of blowing her booty he started to write whatever came to mind which lead to him making the song called "Sum Shit I wrote". Pitchfork had an artical on this a while back.Thun wrote:Common "I Used To Love H.E.R."
What in the fuck is he talking about?

Yeah I've heard the demo but the album cut is way more raw to me.Galvatron78 wrote:i liked the demo version better because he compares himself to a Stapler instead......"it's the only way to keep the paper together sun!!"Boris. wrote:He is comparing himself to a gun. If you can't walk the walk, don't talk the talk.
