[discuss] rap styles as a trend
im sure this is something that is not new, but lately, with 'supa dupa' flow that permeated everyones rap style a coupla years back, and now with this new like, '2chainz' flow? (i dunno what to call it, but i feel like maybe he is responsible for it. correct me if im wrong) it seems like rappers are just hopping on the popular style of the moment, even beyond beats. what do you guys think about this? issue? non issue? i dont particularly have a problem with it, its just weird to turn on songs and and hear everyone rapping the same way.
i just noticed it recently, with childish gambino's new track, this dude t shirts new track and a buncha other cats.

Gambino: http://www.2dopeboyz.com/2012/04/02/chi ... egetables/
there's definitely more people who are hopping on this style right now, these were just the easiest two to recall and bring up links for.

sounds like asap rocky phrasing with kreayshawn's tone of voice.Piff Tannen wrote: Gambino: http://www.2dopeboyz.com/2012/04/02/chi ... egetables/
I like that T-Shirt track because he actually sounds like he worked on that style a little bit more. That Childish Gambino track is better than most of his stuff I've heard. Just wish he's try more shit than just whole trendy shit thats in that constantly hear him do. Basically, I'm waiting for this biting of that style to go downhill in the next 2 years gradually. It was never a bad style to flip but it allows people to rap at a easy pace and copy some shit thats been around for more than 15 years. Only thing different about it is the sounds of the instruments, the producers, and the emcees.
I think my main problem is that people say that whole style is the new school of what hip hop is now and if you do anything thats at a faster speed without that bounce/"swag"/etc., it can be called out as being outdated, IMO.

I would say in general, biting someone's rapping style, is to today's rapper what starting your verse with a Biggie line was in the early 00's or dropping in a Rakim line was to the late 90's.
So, yes I think I agree with what you're saying piff.

I like his verse on this. I don't give a fuck who it mimics.
