Soul Music Thread.
None of the OG post is relevant. Just use thread to post and discuss soul music. -Afronaut
What's the 's take on how "Soul" music is distinguished from other genres?
Ive taken part in more than a few conversations about what actually constitutes "Soul" music over years.
For me, since in a significant way most of the popular genres that came behind it, were spawned from the traditions of Gospel and Blues, it is hard to distinguish when "Soul" starts and stops. I think both Gospel and Blues are infused with the elements that would later become Soul, R&B, Funk, Hip-Hop/Soul and what have you, so where (if at all) do you draw the line?
Thoughts?

not really, you seem to be drastically overthinking thisThe Afronaut wrote: it is hard to distinguish when "Soul" starts and stops.
genres do overlap, and things do get blurry in places, but if an otis redding song makes you ponder this kind of shit instead of just enjoying yourself... you're doing it wrong

Not surprising. Im an overthinker in general and get asked the question a lot. Just wondering what other think about it.drizzle wrote:not really, you seem to be drastically overthinking thisThe Afronaut wrote: it is hard to distinguish when "Soul" starts and stops.
Thats just it, why would you cite Otis over say Jerry Butler? Why is Otis Redding so much more identified with "Soul"?genres do overlap, and things do get blurry in places, but if an otis redding song makes you ponder this kind of shit instead of just enjoying yourself... you're doing it wrong
I was just trying to start a conversation. Upload only/no discussion is one of the reasons Rubin suffers from lack of traffic in my opinion...Rabbi Jihadovich wrote:Why don't you make some uploads instead.

Again, wild overthinking. Otis is simply the first example that came to mind, I could've named dozens of others. Jerry Butler is not as well known to me, so his name didn't come up first.
I suppose you could argue he came to mind because his music (in my mind at least) represents the genre crystallized in its pinnacle, the optimal form. But he's not the only artist who this characteristic applies to.

for me Soul starts with Sam Cooke and ends roughly at Marvin Gaye's death.

Okay, maybe I started off too far down the rabbit hole.
Lemme try this instead: Which Soul Music artists do you enjoy and why?

I like teh Mayer. This is the homies band, "Soul Scratch" - we're puttin out their album. I'm partial to them but probably homie biased too. Aside from the lead singer having no business at all wearing skinny jeans, I think they're actually pretty good.
funny story too - the lead singer actually plays John Belushi as a Blues Brother at Universal Studios lol.

Mary J. Blige is the reigning queen of Hip-Hop Soul. Hope that answers the question. Peace.

I've been diving deep into late 70s/early 80s soul recently. I have a long ways to go, but this is probably my favorite at the moment:
Atlantic Starr - Let's Get Closer

CF Mix
http://www.divshare.com/download/23942419-368
Not good enough to be included on their Greatest Hits, apparently.

Re: Soul Music Thread.
difficult genre for me because most of it was available only on albums 7inches went out of fashion and there are so many albums with a lot of terrible stale drum computer programming and kitschy arrangements but there are also a lot of amazing songs. for me they just get lost in the shuffle. i never liked to buy an album with atrocious cover art and a lot of bad songs for one or two good songs.Roy Johnson wrote:I've been diving deep into late 70s/early 80s soul recently. I absolutely love neo-soul. Algebra, Dwele, Jill, Conya Doss, Raheem Devaughn, all those guys are pretty good. However, when they are bad, see: Jaguar Wright, they are bad.
