The Countess X (1976)
This was basically a hardcore porno directed by Jean Rollin about some South American jewel thief. It's a porno.

Vampire Ecstasy (1974)
Joseph Sarno's erotic vampire borkfest. Pretty dull but picks up near the end after all the annoying bongo playing.

The Blade (1995)
Had not seen this Tsui Hark film in a very long time, surprised by how much it stood the test of time. I found lots of parallels with spaghetti westerns on my latest viewing. Got to say, I think this movie is a classic.

Haven't watched it yet, have it downloading now but it looks really good.

If anyone is interested in culinary documentaries, A Matter of Taste with Paul Liebrant is great. As is El Bulli about Ferran Adria's restaurant that was in Spain.

I thought RE 1 was great for what it was, and 4 was watchable

How to Survive a Plague (2012) - AIDS documentary, found it more interesting because the crisis was unfolding before I was old enough to understand it when the events were playing out.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) - yeah I'd never seen it, it came out several years before I was born. was reminded to finally watch it when I was browsing ebay & came across the hilarious Thai poster for it http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fast-Times-at-R ... 257bf025a1
Image
Freaky Deaky (2012) - read one review I-forget-where that related it to a super shitty Tarantino movie, but it's worse than that.

Life of Pi (2012) - loved it, favorite moments were the 'Richard Parker' screams & the taka-tiki-taka-tiki-tu dance instructor

Unknown (2011)
Liam Neeson was pretty much Liam Neeson. This time he was in Germany.

The Man With The Iron Fists (2012)
RZA definitely bit off more than he could chew and he was a horrendous actor in this. Despite being a mess, it was very entertaining. Not sure why, maybe it's to do with how weirdly abstract the whole film felt with the modern elements interwoven in.

silver linings playbook -- not a bad movie by any means, but wasn't really digging it and the scene in which them all everybody were placing wagers on the iggs as well as the dance twds the end made me embarrassed for everyone in that room as well as the one i was in. just plain fucking stupid. j law killed no doubt. could've used a touch more dusk (chris tucker), tho

Murder on The Orient Express - One of those impeccable constructs that holds up on the strength of its building blocks long after all novelty is gone from the big twist. I didn't even realize until this viewing that Albert Finney was playing Poirot, dude disappears into the role completely. Watching him slowly become more and more agitated with the other character until the finally explodes into apoplexy during the big reveal might be the greatest pleasure to be had here.

April Fools Day (1986) - I bought this two years ago, intending to see it on April 1st, forgetting it two years in a row. This year I remembered and finally saw it. It's an ok and fairly mild slasher, or even slasher-parody.

Image

The Red Chapel (2009) - Danish journalist Mads Brügger made the best documentary last year, The Ambassador. His earlier docu is a similar rogue-journalist inside look at North Korea. He and two adopted South Koreans go to the DRPK intending to perform some incompetent theater to NK authorities. This is a must-see if you care about the NK-conflict, to my knowledge there are few accounts of how it is to be there. Watch this and watch The Ambassador too.

Image

Shokuzai (English title: Penance / Atonement) (2013) - Tightly woven miniseries by Kurosawa. Very good, healthy alternatives to those who are tired of the same cliche-ridden and badly written TV-shows. And it doesn't hurt that one of Japan's best directors and actresses are both involved in this. It's definitely worth it to arrive at the payoff and I'm thrilled that Kurosawa is back from hiatus. Hope we won't have to wait as long for his next project.

end of watch -- was right and ready to say this was like a doc shot harsh times, but imdb'ed it just prior to posting and lo and behold they're by the same dude. really enjoy both for the record

it's a disaster -- not tremendously packed full of laughs, but a pretty refreshing take on apocolypto. very play like, loved the ending

Grave Encounters 2 (2012)
Enjoyed the first one a lot. The sequel deals with film students and for about one third of the film's running time, we're provided with a critique on modern horror, gay frat party high jinx and the revelation that Grave Encounters 1 was all real; hello, meta! These new characters are really, really fucking annoying by the way and I found myself wishing for these fuckers to just get to the haunted hospital already. By the time they get there, it shifts into horror although much of the dread is absent. Everything rushes as a blur and much of the atmosphere is lacking. Some cool scenes occasionally, but a rushed script, inept director and awful cast makes for an inferior movie. Shame really.

The Land of Hope (2013) - Sion Sono makes another movie focusing on post-Fukushima Japan, but without all of the genre-elements and offbeat humor as in Himizu. This a touching film with real emotions and characters that could be real people. The beatiful Megumi is great as a wife and mother who becomes batshit paranoid about radiation. But mainly this a tale of family and roots. Sono is still the best director working today, and now that he has pleased his critics who wonder if he can tell a story without violence and other exploitative devices, I hope he goes back to the universe Cold Fish happened in.

Image

Northwest (2013) - This new Danish gangsterfilm might be every bit as good as Pusher. The parallel-universe of dangerous thugs in otherwise quiet and civil Denmark often works really well, given how they are, at least still for a little while, a bit of an anomaly. With a gangwar currently raging here the timing of this movie is perfect, showing how some are just in search of guidance and friendship, but also that criminals in one of the worlds richest countries with the most opportunities are all, to a certain degree, just greedy and lazy scum.

Exterminator 2 (1984)
Image

FINALLY WATCHED IT!!!!!!

No cop side story in this sequel as they substituted it for break dance scenes. Almost as OTT as Death Wish III, with Van Peebles channeling Mad Max villainy when not caught in the dilemma whether to rock baby dreads or a post-apocalyptic flat top.

Wake in Fright (1971) - Aussie film about a schoolteacher passing through a small town in the outback. Circumstances forces him to stay in the city against his will, leeching off the townies who like to drink beer and shoot kangaroos. This film is great existential horror, in a way its downright terrifying. The movie was lost for a long time but a final copy was recovered and subsequently rereleased, I hear a remake is in the works.

Zombie 4: After Death (1988)
Running zombies! Leaping zombies! Talking zombies! Gun-totting zombies! All this and some famous gay porn star (I watched the interviews afterwards, son) as the male lead in Claudio Fragrasso's trashy action horror flick, with an ending that makes no fucking sense.

Marathon Man (1976)

Saw it for the first time yesterday. Liked it a lot. Also made me realize once again, how different blockbusters were then compared to now. Laurence Olivier completely nailed his part. As did Scheider and Hofmann. Great cast. Ballsy script. Dope movie.

Seeing the Red 2 trailer reminded me that I hadn't seen this yet.

Yooooooooooo son. Shit is dark. Definitely liked it - the two leads are pretty damned great, and that car stabbing scene was trill as fuck. Bumping Oldboy up in the Netflix queue now.

Parker (2013) - Worst insertion of an actor/actress to use the movie to market them in a while (Jennifer Lopez). I just wanted to watch Statham do some grimy shit (high rise apartment portion was pretty good), but fuck the constant Lopez was unbearable.

Also I saw the white Michelle Obama:

Image

The Place Beyond The Pines (2012) - uh, pretty unexpected happening that happens in the movie, glad I avoided spoilers. Liked it for the most part.

Dick Tracey (1990) - Felt more uncomfortable watching this than Salo or Martyrs (the makeup / set awfulness / early 90's vibe / youtube quality rip all coupled together). I had a Lips Manlis actioin figure mixed in with my GI Joes & Ninja Turtles growing up and had no idea what it was from until now. Very underutilized character.

Dear Zachary - finally got around to checking this out. Knew there was something coming, but though it was gonna be something scandalous but harmless..... WELP... absolutely incredible movie though, even beyond the :ohsh: revelations. The most moving part imo was actually the montage at the end, I almost started bawling when it hit
