Re: Comics (Obama approves of this thread)
After owning it for like 4 years I finally finished Pride of Baghdad by BKV today. Fucking hated it, I see now why I could only ever get a few pages in. Dude is a genius but I don't get the hype about that book, it was really corny and heavy handed. I think I'm gonna read the Y: The Last Man series for a third time next. Best comic book ever written.
Can't wait for vol 4 of Saga.

Yeah, Y: The Last Man is so good that my dad picked it up on a whim and read through the whole run. It's the only comic I can remember him reading in my 26 years on this planet. (Though I guess someone must've picked out those "Spiderman and His Amazing Friends" VHS for me, and I don't figure it was my mom.)Positive A wrote:Just read the FIRST book of Vaughn's Y: The Last Man. Glorious. First thing I've read of his and I can tell that this is going to be some next level shit.

Is there a whole collection of Y I can buy, checked amazon no luck. Would rather by one or two large volumes than the 10 trades or whatever

I think the best you're going to find are the 5 "deluxe edition" hardcoversalpha wrote:Is there a whole collection of Y I can buy, checked amazon no luck. Would rather by one or two large volumes than the 10 trades or whatever

Yup. This is what I have. Pretty awesome. Finished Vol. 1. Excellent read so far.SuperFeen wrote:I think the best you're going to find are the 5 "deluxe edition" hardcoversalpha wrote:Is there a whole collection of Y I can buy, checked amazon no luck. Re: Comics (Obama approves of this thread)
All of the Vaughn books are quality at bare minimum. When you're done with Y: The Last Man, give Ex-Machina a shot. I really enjoyed The Escapists as well as his primary run on Runaways, and Saga is shaping up to be amazing as well.
Re: Comics (Obama approves of this thread)
I'm just gonna bump the comment I mentioned earlier about Brian K Vaughan and Marcos Martin's The Private Eye. If you like BKV's other stuff, I think you might like this. Personally, I think it's brilliance:

Speaking of brilliance; Brubaker and Philips are starting a new series in August called "The Fade Out" (did i already mention that in this thread; i can't fuckin' remember).

The first project from their groundbreaking five-year deal at Image will have Brubaker and Phillips fans, old and new, at the edge of their seats, as they weave an epic crime story unlike anything they've done before. Hollywood - 1948. A noir film stuck in endless reshoots. A writer plagued with nightmares from the war and a dangerous secret. An up-and-coming starlet's suspicious death. And a maniacal Studio Mogul and his Security Chief who will do anything to keep the cameras rolling before the Post-War boom days come crashing down. THE FADE OUT is the most ambitious series yet from the award-winning Noir Masters

I want to read that BKV thing but I have no interest in reading comics digitally
Re: Comics (Obama approves of this thread)
i'm an 80-year old wrapped in the physique of a 31-year old, so i was with ya up until this year, actually. get yourself ComicRack (or some such thing), and it's a pretty enjoyable way to read a comic. i'll keep buying physical copies til the day i keel over, though.Hayzoos wrote:I want to read that BKV thing but I have no interest in reading comics digitally

Re: Comics (Obama approves of this thread)
I tried this. Would much rather a physical copy in my hands.
Re: Comics (Obama approves of this thread)
I use a kindle fire. Gets annoying sometimes. But I don't have space to keep physical copies.
Re: Comics (Obama approves of this thread)
Ya i guess it wouldn't be so bad if I used stabler but all I have is an iPhone. Wish they would do a made to order type thing instead.

Just finished volumes 1 and 2 of Hawkeye, and it definitely lived up to the hype. It's so different from anything I've read, and the Pizza Dog issue was next level.

Glad you liked it because I fucking loved it too and have been praising it for some time. Got into that new Moon Knight by Warren Ellis. It's pretty awesome stuff. Only 5 issues on stands right now and I think Ellis is only writing 6 (?) but it's an impressive book.
Nothing is fucking with that Saga though.

Re: Comics (Obama approves of this thread)
I was in Books-a-Million today, wandering among the trades and graphic novels. I stumbled upon Sex Criminals and remembered some of the talk in this thread. For $8, I had to grab it and... well... a book about a sex-fiend librarian with orgasm superpowers, written by Matt Fraction? Into it. The background gags in the porn shop are awesome.
Also, Saga was everything it was cracked up to be. I read through all three trades in one sitting, and immediately regretted blowing through it that quickly. I need more.

Read Sex Criminals recently. I really enjoyed it. I thought the straight to camera narration worked well in it. The sex police are pretty hillarious. I'm looking forward to the next one.
Buy my mixtape.

I grabbed #7 today. Not a bad issue, but the series doesn't bowl me over. I trust Fraction, so I'll stick with it.T Rav wrote:Read Sex Criminals recently. I really enjoyed it. Saw you post this one last night. Did some research on it and it looks pretty awesome. Grabbed the first four today. No. 1 is a second printing w/ a different cover. so that is kind of lame because this cover is so great:dilla7 wrote:Nailbiter

(Zero):Welcome to Craw County, Alabama, home of Boss BBQ, the state champion Runnin’ Rebs football team...and more bastards than you’ve ever seen. When you’re an angry old man like Earl Tubb, the only way to survive a place like this...is to carry a really big stick. From the acclaimed team of JASON AARON and JASON LATOUR, the same bastards who brought you Scalped and Wolverine: Japan’s Most Wanted, comes a southern fried crime series that’s like the Dukes of Hazzard meets the Coen Brothers...on meth.
Edward Zero is the perfect execution machine – a spy who breaks the rules to get things done. When a stolen device appears in the center of a long-running conflict, Zero comes to retrieve it. The problem is, the device is inside a living, breathing, bio-modified terrorist and there's an entire army after it.
Don't want to really say anything else because there's spoilers and shit all over these books. All I will say is:
Re: Comics (Obama approves of this thread)
Read the 4 part death of wolverine arc. Not bad not good, just meh

Went to buy Southern Bastards at the comic shop. Sold Out.

Just got an advance reading copy of this through a digital service called NetGalley (for librarians, teachers, and other book-recommender-type-people). I'm about one issue deep so far, and it's pretty dope.Positive A wrote:

Also, while I'm typically not opposed to reading digital comics, the DRM on this thing makes it absolutely miserable.
