A lot of the big dawgs passed away now. Not sure how good they can make this without any new interviews with key figures.

Skyfall (2012) - It's been forever since I've seen a Bond-film but I liked the trailer for Spectre so I figured I should check this out before going to see that one. This Bond is very Liam Neeson which works well for me and the action scenes are very nice. Makes me think I will really like the new one since the people who hated Skyfall seem to detest Spectre even more.
Black Souls (2014) - Sicilian gangsterfilm which fits in well with other modern crime classics like Animal Kingdom. This is easy on the violence and full of family-issues. If you can accept that then you are rewarded with a beautiful and sophisticated drama.
Cartel Land (2015) - Documentary about autodefensa vigilante-groups in Mexico and some of the "border patrol" rednecks who bumble about in the outback to keep "drugs" (really they mean Mexicans) away from USA. This is a very interesting new angle on a subject which has been explored in countless docus already.

Re: Let's Discuss Potential Movie Purchases/Viewings
Cool sounding set. Don't know shit about these
Everyone knows the classic American horror titles: Night of the Living Dead, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and A Nightmare on Elm Street, to name but a few. But we want to tell you a different story – a story of the unsung heroes of American terror... Whether it's a film that has languished in obscurity, or a movie that's at risk of being lost due to lack of source materials, American Horror Project is here to ensure that these unique slices of the American Nightmare are brought back into the public consciousness and preserved for all to enjoy.
Volume I of this series presents three tales of violence and madness from the 1970s. Malatesta's Carnival of Blood (Christopher Speeth, 1973) sees a family arrive at a creepy, dilapidated fairground in search of their missing daughter, only to find themselves at the mercy of cannibalistic ghouls lurking beneath the park. Meanwhile, The Witch Who Came from the Sea (Matt Cimber, 1976), stars Mollie Perkins (The Diary of Anne Frank) as a young woman whose bizarre and violent fantasies start to bleed into reality – literally. Lastly, every parent's worst nightmare comes true in The Premonition (Robert Allen Schnitzer, 1976), a tale of psychic terror in which five-year-old Janie is snatched away by a strange woman claiming to be her long-lost mother.
Newly remastered from the best surviving elements and contextualised with brand new supplementary material, with American Horror Project we can re-evaluate an alternative history of American horror and film heritage.

Only knew of The Witch Who Came From the Sea, since it used to be a video nasty over here. They all look like something SWV or Vinegar Syndrome would release instead of Arrow.
Copped a few bootlegs:
Death Steps in the Dark *
Death Carries A Cane *
Too Beautiful to Die / Nothing Underneath 2
Naked Girl Killed in the Park
* seen both of these Maurizio Pradeaux films already, but official releases are either shitty quality or non English language friendly.

Some good Golden Harvest stuff coming out from Warner Archives, Big Bullet and Blade Of Fury are the to get here imo. Pedicab Driver is considered a classic but has way too much chinese slapstick that doesn't translate well and draaaaaags when you're just there for the fights.

Amuck! getting the Camera Obscura treatment in 2016.
Gonna cost a fair bit to cop, though.

Damn that's awesome. When I was London last month we were at this spot called The Bunker, and the toilets were papered floor to ceiling with random pages of 2000AD comics, all sorts of shit I've never even heard of. Spent a good 20 mins in there just reading the walls

Ben Wheatley's (Sightseers) new film High Rise. Looks really fucking good. No doubt will confuse the shit out of Tom Hiddleston's fan club.

Been waiting for this for a year now. LOVE that fucking book, although apparently Wheatley stripped some of the more pointed allegorical stuff

^ It's a worthy rental. Rollins is really good in it, but it felt like I was watching a low budget tv pilot than a feature film.
New High Rise trailer:
Can't wait for this.
Loving the use of Tangerine Dreams' Love on a Real Train from the Risky Business soundtrack

Re: Let's Discuss Potential Movie Purchases/Viewings
oooh good trailer, can't wait
'good rental' is exactly right for He Never Died, it's a fun little movie but doesn't quite hit that the Purge 2/The Guest b-movie level. Very cool character premise though, kinda wish the trailer didn't lay it out flatly since the movie tries to dole it out little by little all the way until the end.

Really tempted by this new Shout Factory release. Watched the trailer for Ghost Warrior and it looks like a lost gem. Anyone want to vouch?

Re: Let's Discuss Potential Movie Purchases/Viewings
Arrow just announced their new UK & US releases today.
Lots of good stuff (Dillinger, The Stuff, Bride of Re-Animator, The Zero Boys, The Black Cat, Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key)
But most intriguing is this Gangster VIP boxset.
I'm not familiar with these at all but they are yakuza films directed by Toshio Masuda who made Rusty Knife and the two awesome Shadow Hunger movies (and Tora Tora Tora which I think is overrated), looks pretty awesome.

Re: Let's Discuss Potential Movie Purchases/Viewings
I've seen Kill! before, it's great although a little lighter in tone than these descriptions suggest. IDK how the rest of the series stacks up to it.
Gotta shamefully admit that this box reminded me that I never watched any of the Nikkatsu Noir set, i think it's still sealed (i'm fired)

All good, I've had it pretty much since it came out and think i still need to watch 1 or 2 of them as well.
Re: Let's Discuss Potential Movie Purchases/Viewings
Arrow's 4K Blu-Ray of Deep Red only hit shelves a couple of days ago and it's already out of print.
Glad I got mine already.

Re: Let's Discuss Potential Movie Purchases/Viewings
Randomly stumbled across mentions of this Italian gangster movie and it's looking really dope. Surprised there wasn't more mention of it here, maybe they didn't find distribution. Apparently it's on Netflix.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4025514/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
not many English reviews but the ones that are there are very positive
turns out this director did a TV show version of Gomorrah and Romanzo Criminale, didn't even know the latter existed but it also has very good reviews.

Re: Let's Discuss Potential Movie Purchases/Viewings
Caught this on Netflix and liked it a whole lot, maybe the most I've enjoyed a gangster movie since Un Prophete (although it's not as good as that one). It's very specifically Italian as it hinges on local politics and the way mafia/government and society tie up over there, and clearly has some of the old 70s eurocrime DNA in it (albeit nicely updated with obvious Mann and Scorsese influences which make it more palpable to an American viewer). The plot is complex but told well, it's well acted and shot, the characters are engaging, even the use of music is on point... just very solid stuff all around. Resolves a little too neatly maybe but that's a small complaint.drizzle wrote:Randomly stumbled across mentions of this Italian gangster movie and it's looking really dope.
