looks like a Nolanized version of some Allan Quatermain shit, all about itReteaming with his "Locke" writer/director Steven Knight, they've delivered the eight-episode series "Taboo." Set in 1814, the story follows James Keziah Delaney (Hardy), a rogue adventurer who returns from Africa with 14 ill-gotten diamonds to seek vengeance after the death of his father. Refusing to sell the family business to the East India Company, he sets out to build his own trade and shipping empire and finds himself playing a dangerous game with two warring nations, Britain and America.

This was tight, a good start. There's probably gonna be some dumb writing choices and sloggy parts but the atmosphere, Hardy grunting and Pryce swearing will balance those out.
Curious how supernatural they go with it, the premiere made some interesting suggestions but nothing definitive.

This shit was so great. The LOOK of all the scenes shot outside just had me in awe. Reminded me of watching Barry Lyndon how they just completely immerse you in that world.
The first scene w/ Pryce where they're discussing Hardy's backstory was so great and then the 2nd scene w/ Pryce was even better. The casting choices are so, so excellent in those scenes (in every scene for that matter).
The little grunt that Hardy offers up when he stands up after Pryce threw the envelope at him had me jumping up and down.

Finally finished this, great first season. Glad it's been renewed and we're getting a second and possibly third season.

Re: Taboo (Tom Hardy shoots the East India Company in the fa
I was right. I enjoyed a lot of it but I think they fucked up on the writing, it was somehow both over-plotted and wildly underwritten. So much time spent on the minutiae of his scheming in London and it still ends up mostly dramatically inert, so many allusions to his backstory that remain completely unexplained, so much time spent on the subplot with his sister for very little effect aside from establishing Hardy as an incestuous psychic rapist or something. They never even really bothered to fully explain his motivations.drizzle wrote:There's probably gonna be some dumb writing choices and sloggy parts but the atmosphere, Hardy grunting and Pryce swearing will balance those out. .
But even with all that they managed a fun ending and i like the idea of tossing everything up in the air and moving the principals somewhere else for a new adventure, so I'm glad they got s2.

This was a great first season. I wish it were longer, but I imagine some of the vaguery of his backstory was left in to sew up future episodes, arcs, etc.
Side note: if you can watch this without subtitles, you are a bigger bork than me.

I have the same complaints as drizzle about this show but loved it none the less. I might be gay for hardy now, he was a heathen and a half. Even the catch phrase, I have a use for you, so good
