Doesn't have to be the subject of the whole song, but that's the focus. Add on, we have almost (at least) one per year now.

Nicely done everyone. Love that we're getting everything from old school to current day, all different regions, some tracks with just a bar here or there, others with the song built around it. Exactly what I'm looking for, keep addin' on.
drizzle wrote:Cappadonna's Run
Meant to include this in my original comment alongside the Ghost / Jada version, as I obviously link the two in my head and it was part of what initially sparked this idea for me many years ago. So, off to a forgetful start for me but I knew I was missing some really glaringly obvious ones that were options I considered at one point or another but couldn't conjure in the moment.
the dead poet wrote:Cop Killa (that one might be a stretch)
Glad you brought this up and because I am asking for examples of a fairly common but also relatively specific storylines, a small distinction should be made. In the scenarios I'm looking for, the cops are the “predators” rather than the “prey”, in the sense that they are the ones giving chase, at least initially.

(This keeps us away from the general anti-police songs, of which there are many niches and types: from calls for violent revolution, to anti-brutality socio-political messages, all the way down to these guys are kind of a nuisance, harassing me when I'm not doing anything wrong.)

Now the tales can be told from someone involved or secondhand, fictional or not, the officers justified in their suspicions, mistaken, or outright crooked, the potential perpetrators can be caught, escape, be killed, and / or can have violent responses to cops in order to try and maintain freedom. In fact, the more variety in the style and end results, the better from a playlist and storytelling perspective. Everything from hidin' out to car chases, goin' quietly or out in a blaze of glory. The lone common ground necessary is the (at minimum perceived threat of) pursuit of a citizen / an alleged criminal by law enforcement.
fatboybrandon wrote:I always thought Naughty By Nature's Daddy Was a Street Corner had one of the coolest police getaway skits in hip hop.
Honestly didn't even consider it prior to this moment, but if people have fitting intros / interludes / outros, humorous or serious that fit the theme, those are welcome to be added to the list we have goin' too.

There's also some nice videos for a good portion of the tracks that've been posted as well.

Good call. Speaking of, that reminds me. I see your Bay Area rapper recording a song on the run and raise you another local man who two years prior to his run-in with the law had already coined the term "player haters": Filthy Phil, who shot a cop during a traffic violation because he didn't want to go back to jail, was on the run from the FBI, appeared on America's Most Wanted, and during that time, made an EP and titular track called The Manhunt back in '92, with a cover by Phunky Phat Graph-X. Those kinda songs are stories within stories.
step one wrote:No one has mentioned 6 N The Morning and you're all dead to me.
 Deservedly so. That's another, smack you the face with how obvious and essential and classic it is and I had it floating around as an option at one point but clearly spaced it here. For some reason the subject matter is so specific but also so ubiquitous that with a bunch of these tracks I can rap alongside every word but don't always immediately consciously think of it as a potential response even when asking the question of what fits the bill to myself. That was part of why I wanted to pool everyone else's memory banks as well because the majority of these are either painfully simple, tailor-made ones that I look at and think duh, how could I have missed that, and other ones where I considered it for a moment but didn't retain and articulate it and therefore it didn't make the cut when converting the nebulous, multi-year, back-of-the-mind playlist into a physical written one. So as embarrassing as some of these lapses in thought are, at least I'm clearly not alone there. Plus these reminders are helping my "oh yeah" moments. And the other few oddball choices I may have never come up with on my own add a lot as well.
step one wrote:The Firm - 5 Minutes to Flush
Because I think I remember it being kind of confusing but can you help me out again here as to which version of this is the best? Or best for the circumstances? I thought we had established a consensus in the recent past, right?

And this goes for anyone in general, if the song you're talking about has a particular version to go for (or avoid), it'd be cool to know that.
EichTurner wrote:I swear there's so many Bay Area songs like this but I can't think of them and shit. ...like eight out of ten Bay Area albums will have at least a verse like this.
Exactly, I'm having a similar issue man. Another reason for this thread to exist. As you remember more, keep addin' on. Also, as someone born and raised in the Bay, can confirm. However, I'd probably have to relisten to a bunch of shit to actually add much more to the list, since my brain is apparently broken.

Just glancing at what we have so far there are people posting bond, out on bail, warrants for their arrest, the consequences of pulling heists or committing other offenses. So everybody keep thinkin' manhunts, (attempted?) getaways, and fugitives, innocent or otherwise, because there's definitely still some fitting songs out there we're missin'.

Speaking of 6 n The Morning, Who Got Some Gangsta Shit on the Murder Was The Case soundtrack reworks the first verse so you can throw that in there.

Also, add PE's Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos and You're Gonna Get Yours to the list.

some more street cinematics from The Wu.

"Who Killed Jane" by EPMD

"Who Shot Rudy?" by Screwball: grimy raps straight outta Queensbridge projects by a crew who make a getaway from the cops while bragging about killing our former mayor Rudy Guiliani.

Kool G Rap & DJ Polo – Wanted: Dead or Alive (1990)
Kool G Rap & DJ Polo – Still Wanted Dead or Alive (1992)
X-Raided – Call Tha Guardz ft. Sicx (1992)*
Brotha Lynch Hung – Lay Low ft. Lethal (2001)

* – Maybe a bit of a stretch as it does start off with cop killing (though we aren't told what exactly led up to that), but the first and third verse are largely about avoiding capture.

On the contrary, I'm glad you're helpin' to keep this thread alive.

Just updated the list in the original post to make it easier to see what we have already and to show the overall progress.

Still lookin' for more, so continue to think up other inclusions everybody. And don't be afraid to throw a suggestion out there, we're playin' fairly fast and loose with what qualifies.

For example, I can't allow myself to remove G Rap's On the Run, despite it being about the mafia rather than cops. I guess if the song and the chase are both classic and general enough, small exceptions will be made.

I may have overlooked it, however wouldn't Temperatures Rising qualify? Was surprised I didn't see it on there as that's the first to come to mind.

Oh, and another great one that comes to mind is Don't Die by Killer Mike off R.A.P. Music.

Yeah, Temperature's Rising was one of the first on my original mental list and somehow got left out. Thankfully this thread is righting stuff like that.

Keep throwin' names everyone, this has been great so far. Nice to see some more recent material added as well, now we're down to just six of the last thirty two years that don't have a "representative song" and all six are post-2001.

Was checking out the Jaysaun album recently and came across this one. I think the whole album is solid and he's an underrated storyteller. My favorite song: "Don't Matter" feat. Reks & Edo. G.

Jay gets pursued by a SWAT team to conclude this song, and the ending is tragic.

Those are all some good picks Eich.

And Brandon, yeah I heard that Jaysun album. Problem here is this song is lacking the key element required, being on the lam. Right? I don't know, I listened back to it again but I don't see it.

It's not enough that the cops or even the SWAT team are in pursuit, people get arrested all the time. The alleged criminal must be aware of the potential threat of capture and try to avoid it, at least initially. There needs to be a back and forth between the two parties. Turning yourself in to the station or setting up a suicide by cop are surely possible eventual outcomes, but to actually be / have been on the run necessitates some time of resistance first.

And it can be a short and simple part of an otherwise unrelated song like that, it just has to convey that message. Like Percy Keith on Superstition (2018), “Fuck twelve and five-oh, I'm Waldo, come and find me.”

Post by fatboybrandon »

Grabbin' ya nuts and kickin butts, the police strike the ghetto community once again in another addition to this wonderful Hip Hop thread..

"Crooked Cops" by Napalm, produced by Rockwilder (off the soundtrack for Training Day)

"Who Called Da Cops" by Knucklehedz, produced by Erick Sermon. The Hit Squad duo share scenarios of avoid the law while highlighting police misconduct.

Ran Reed's "Cops Did The Shooting" prod. by Nick Wiz, a warning and story about being pursued by crooked cops.

Nas talks about being pursued in the first verse of "Cops Keep Firing", prod. by DJ Green Lantern

J.Bond & D.R.U.G.S. Beats "They Murdered Him", a dope duo from NC. The 2nd verse is a police pursuit and the whole song talks about the wrongs of America.
