i dont think its dying, i just think all of the most powerful nerd rap dudes are laying low at the moment. Aesop, El-P, Illogic, Anticon, E&A, Sage, Buck65... all the rappers that can be lumped togther like that. Most of them are either in the studio working on shit or taking some time off right now.
It's fucking winter. Nobody really wants to be out on the road right now unless they have to just to eat. Wait till March rolls around. Shit'll start flowing back out in the stores and the touring shall begin in earnest.

The overall quality of that kind of rap has dropped. Aesop's last record had mixed reactions, atmospheres last three have sucked. Celestial Clockwork was alright, but not on par with Illogic's previous work. Can O "broke up" also.
Sage is still making great music though, and Doom is as popular as ever.
Hopefully Aesop comes through with his next project.

I don't think its dying. I think muthafuckas on the underground now wanna dis the shit to look cool and praise commercial rap more so if you ask me. Which is a cop out. It don't matter if the shit is gangsta rap, nerd rap, super-scientifical-exterrestial rap. As long as YOU like it, that shit don't matter.......

Gotta love this topic. I guess its on the decline as seen in the past year or twos internet backlash, but the hipster magazines still eat it up. This year in particular we have seen the rehashing of some old shit we all loved or for some what you read about and learned you had to love to be down, like say:
the great De La Soul record
no said date
Kanye West love him then hate him fest
Masta Ace
Royce
lil john
Pete Rock
Just Blaze
Ghostface
Dipset
Eminem
Nas
etc.....
As for the pompous non-every ear friendly, boring, uninspired, overinspired, universally uncredible nerd rap, well it has put out some very good stuff and alot of stuff that is sorta mainstream flew under the radar too.......the internet message board radar:
Insight- Blast Radius
Cee-lo's album
Maroons- Ambush EP
Rob Sonics album
Erick Sermon-chilltown NY
Leak Bros
Neighborhood watch
Mos Def- New Danger
Murs 3:16
Roots Tipping Point
Shock G album
213- 3 the hard way
J-zone album
Eyedea and Abilities album
Blockhead- Music by cavelight
Dj Signify- Sleep No more
Brother Ali- champion ep
RJD2- Since we last spoke
Foreign Exchange
ALL GOOD STUFF, don't front.
But I see the reason for joy, cause I myself do get some sense of enjoyment when someone wearing a $85 beaten up army jacket from Urban Outfitters who might say the words, "I thought all rap was about money and honey until I heard (Aesop, Atmosphere, Sage Francis)" gets their heart broken , but don't let bad fans ruin good music because........Bazooka Tooth was dope on several levels, I liked the standout cuts on Sevens Travels, and Hope and his Healthy Distrust are greatness, but still...............everything goes back to liking what you like..........ok. I guess the key is don't front on stuff because SuperBuck2000 on a message board say something is wack. Pharrells Frontin was dope too........

Farm-rap, daddy-wouldn't-buy-me-a-pony-rap, dejected-ICP-fan-rap and minivan-rap are what's up for virgins that started listening to rap after 1998 now.
1)I come from a very poor family
2)I am not a fan of ICP
3)I listened to hip-hop/rap 1st in 1989(when I also bought my 1st vinyls)
But I love alot of indie-abstract-experimental hip-hop(aka NERD RAP)

That's what I'm saying. If you like it then you like it. Don't classify my life based on what the fuck I listen to.....ya don't me......Ethix Skeptro wrote:I Drive A Lexus wrote:Yes, Nerd-Rap is dead.

I've been into hip hop since the late 80's and early 90's and like this "nerd rap" or whatever the fuck you wanna call it. Its all hip hop music to me. I think I have the right to listen to Cormega, Dose One, Too Short, and other hip hop artists in if I damn well have the right to.

hey gucci rubbers...
I agree with your original point......
and I think you're an idiot. I think this poll proves one thing: you were right about there being an overall decline in interest in this sub-genre, and you completely lack the ability to come up with any evidence or rational argument to support your fucking theory.

this is one of the most on-point posts on this subject yet..though id strongly disagree that sage is still making worthwhile music..he hasnt done that, in my eyes, since his pre-personal journals days.ChristPuncher wrote:The overall quality of that kind of rap has dropped. I'd love to know how much the people who shit on so-called nerd rap know about Ultramagnetic MC's and Afrika Bambaataa. The grandfather of rap made songs about space too.
Yes...
another wise man has spoken!!!!
