Chat programs
I tried searching as I know there has probably been many threads about this, but couldn't find anything recent.
AIM hasn't been connecting for the past two days, it keeps saying that the AIM service can't be reached. I don't know if it is because AIM is crappy or I have network problems.
Are there any programs where I can create an account, and talk to people that are on my AIM list through it? Or AIM can only chat to AIM?

u can do this with trillian as well...rakesh wrote:i like gaim only because you can create aliases for your buddies. other than that, i think the tabbing system is decent. sometimes i have a problem closing out conversations instead of switching to the next tab.
for simplicity, i just use aim and have never had a problem.

i've never used any of them so i can't say which is best to use but i checked them all out a while ago on the behalf of my computer illiterate brother.SeaTownBlues wrote:WHOA I HAVENT HEARD ABOUT THESE WHICH ONE IS THE EBST
they're all multi protocol i.e. they all allow you to chat with people on aim, msn, yahoo, irq and a bunch of other protocols i cant remember.
trilian is shareware, the unregistered version *might* have ads, i can't quite remember.
gaim and miranda are open source which means free now and forever more.
i installed miranda for my brother in the end. it's a tiny little program (<150k i think it was) which runs by using plugins (also very small in size) to allow connection to other networks so if you only want to talk on aim with it then you only need the aim plugin. there's a whole heap of other plugins for it though to customise appearance, icons etc
out of the three i'd say you better off looking at gaim or miranda
I have blocked a roommate from using AIM before just as a joke.....have you checked the port settings on your router? Maybe someone updated the firmware on your router and you might need to port forward now.......ChristPuncher wrote:I called SBC, the port is fine.
Anyone have any other ideas why I am not able to connect to the AIM server?
