Buildin the Criterion collection...
Just added two new Criterion movies to the library...
the story of floating weeds is a two setter. One disc has the original first film mad in the 30's, then disc two features the directors 1960's re-make of 1930's version ...Just watched the first hour of the 60's title and the movie is hilarious and beautifully done. I know the subtitles don't do the actual lines justice, but I think Criterion is a stickler for getting things done well. Gonna finish this one later on today.
Also, Stray Dogs was recommended to me by a friend who says his pops watched this movie over in Japan while being stationed out their. His pops insists that the movie is good. Hell, Kurosawa and Mifune together is a sure hit. I cant say that Ive seen any Kurosawa movies other than DREAMS that wasn't a period film dealin with ass whoopin sword play in ancient fuduel Japan. Stray Dogs is a crime thriller that takes place in post-war Japan. Mifune is a cop who gets his gun stolen and used throughout the movie to do horrible crimes. Supposedly the movie is about him trying to just get his gun back...Sounds dope as all hell. Later on im gonna get my mind right and sit down to this one cause shit sounds of the cliff...
Anyone else peep these flics? Any other Criterion joints I need to keep my eyes out for?

not to mention the incredible Roger Ebert commentarydarkwingduck wrote:the story of floating weeds is a two setter. Ozu is one of the greats, if you like that, get everything else he has out on Criterion (Tokyo Story, Early Summer, Good Morning)
As far as any other Criterion releases, I mean, what SHOULDNT you get?
They only put out amazing DVDs. Nothing else.
From your 2 selections it looks like you're kinda leaning towards Japanese movies, so I'd recommend any Seijun Suzuki criterion release (Youth of the Beast, Fighting Elegy, Branded to Kill), or more recently Criterion released Ko Nakahira's "Crazed Fruit", or Kurosawa's "Kagemusha"
but honestly, you cant go wrong with any Criterion DVD. It just depends on what your budget is like, cause motherfuckers are expensive

Good to see some Ozu appreciation in here. Truly a notable director. Perhaps the most Japanese of all japanese directors. I've seen a copy of the original last year and it was great. I'm interested in seeing the 60's version though.
I have'nt actually had a chance to see Stray Dogs. But Kurosawa's name speaks for itself.

description from IMDB:
A brilliant surgeon, Professor Genessier, helped by his assistant Louise, kidnaps nice young girls. He removes their faces and tries to graft them onto the head on his beloved daughter Christiane, who has been entirely spoiled in a car crash. All the experiments fail, and the victims die, but Genessier keeps trying...
sounds crazy.

It's good. I had a conversation about this movie with a friend tonight. It's not amazing or anything, but it's good. Creepy face mask, wonderful music, good atmosphere. Check it out.darkwingduck wrote:

SanjUro is pretty good. I have to say, it's one of my least favorite Kurosawa movies, but it's still a good movie. I've seen about 15 Kurosawa movies, and they're all good though, so saying it's his worst isn't saying much.darkwingduck wrote:nice list fuk'n A. WORD UP TO CRITERION. Tokyo Drifter is dope as hell, but hard to really summarize in two sentences. I mean, basically it's about a gangster who has to get out of town and go on the run for a while until he can come back and help his boss. But if you're watching Suzuki movies for their plots... you're wasting your time. The visuals, music, and all the intangibles are all present and dope as hell. Fun ass movie.

The Criterion Collection, a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films, is dedicated to gathering the greatest films from around the world and publishing them in editions that offer the highest technical quality and award-winning, original supplements. Criterion began with a mission to pull the treasures of world cinema out of the film vaults and put them in the hands of collectors. All of the films published under the Criterion banner represent cinema at its finest. In our seventeen years, we've seen a lot of things change, but one thing has remained constant: our commitment to publishing the defining moments of cinema in the world's best digital editions.SeaTownBlues wrote:What is a Criteriom Collection

I have to admit tho, that Criterion collection should put more into the packaging of the movies they put out. I think there was a DVD packaging thread sometime ago and I didnt see any Criterions mentioned. I mean, for the amount of money you spend on them, I'd expect some crazy shit.
DVDs with ill packaging for examples would be FIGHT CLUB, MEMENTO, among others.
