Looks like it's set in the 80's too.

Probably worth posting that in it's own thread.

This year's Film4 Frightfest event's line-up. Amer, The Dead & Serbian Film are my most-wanted sees.

[quote]The complete lineup for the 2010 edition of the Film4 Frightfest has just been announced and, as usual, it is a quality selection of the best in horror film from the UK and around the world. The program splits into two programs - the main lineup and sidebar Discovery program - and you'll find both below!

PROGRAMME = SCREEN 1

THURSDAY AUG 27

6.30pm HATCHET II (World Premiere)

FrightFest continues its strong relationship with Adam Green by hosting the world premiere of the sequel to his 2006 slasher sensation. Picking up right where the splatter-tastic original ended, Marybeth escapes the clutches of the deformed, swamp-dwelling iconic killer Victor Crowley. After learning the truth about her family's connection to the hatchet-wielding madman, Marybeth returns to the Louisiana swamps along with an army of hunters to recover the bodies of her family and exact the bloodiest revenge against the bayou butcher. Delivering unapologetically unrestrained gushers of gore, HATCHET II is everything you loved about the original - only darker, funnier and on shocker steroids.

90 mins Director: Adam Green USA 2010

Danielle Harris - Marybeth
Kane Hodder - Victor Crowley
Tony Todd - Rev. Zombie
Tom Holland - Bob
R.A. Mihailoff - Trent

9.15pm PRIMAL (World Premiere)

Primordial nature runs amuck in a smartly played spectacular slice of neo Ozploitation. 12,000 years ago a caveman tried to communicate the presence of an unknown primal entity only to be devoured by the Neanderthal evil. Now six friends on a field trip set up camp in the same remote wilderness. But when one takes a dip in a nearby waterhole terror descends on the remainder as they realise its kill or be killed. A frenzied visceral nightmare, PRIMAL is a hugely enjoyable rollercoaster ride through primitive panic with the best one word ending ever!

85 mins Director: Josh Reed Australia 2010

Krew Boylan - Mel
Lindsay Farris - Chad
Wil Traval - Dace
Damien Freeleagus - Waren
Rebekah Foord - Kris

11.30pm DEAD CERT (World Premiere)

It's a splatter Disco Inferno as East End gangsters and Eastern European vampires battle it out for the ultimate prize - owenership of the night-club, 'The Inferno'. Foul-mouthed thugs take on a city infested with the undead in a super-modern take on 'Dracula' influenced by House of Hammer classics plus FRIGHT NIGHT and THE LOST BOYS. You think you know all there is to know about vampires? Well, you're wrong, dead wrong, in director Steve Lawson's all-action horror that paints London town red - with blood!

90 mins Director: Steve Lawson UK 2010

Craig Fairbrass - Freddy 'Dead Cert' Frankham
Jason Flemyng - Chelsea Steve
Danny Dyer - Roger Kipling
Billy Murray - Dante Livienko
Dexter Fletcher - Eddie Christian

FRIDAY AUG 28

TOTAL ICON: TOBE HOOPER

Total Film Magazine have joined forces with FrightFest to introduce a new attraction to this year's festival. It's called 'Total Icon' and will celebrate the career of living legend Tobe Hooper. As well as showing Tobe's ferocious 1974 masterpiece THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE on the big screen, we will be unveiling his rarely seen, restored and re-mastered 1969 debut, EGGSHELLS. And that's not all: there will be a 45-minute onstage Q&A with the great man himself, here visiting the UK for the first time in 18 years.

10.45am EGGSHELLS (Total Icon Retrospective)

Director Tobe Hooper's little seen and long thought lost debut feature is now a must-see hippy trippy head space fantasy time capsule containing many portents of THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE to come. Hooper: "It's a real movie about 1969, kind of verite but with a little push, improvisation mixed with magic. It was about the beginning and end of the subculture. Most of it takes place in a commune house. But what they don't know is that in the basement is a crypto-embryonic hyper-electric presence that managed to influence the house and the people in it. The presence has embedded itself in the walls and grows into this big bulb, half-electronic, half organic. Almost like an eye, but like a big light, it comes out of the wall, manipulating and animating. I've always described it as being a mixture of Andy Warhol's TRASH and Walt Disney's FANTASIA".

90 mins Director: Tobe Hooper USA 1969

Mahlon Forman - Mahlon
Boris Schnurr (Kim Henkel) - Toz
Ron Barnhart - Ben Skabarsak
Amy Lester - Amy
David Noll - David

1.00pm THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE (Total Icon Retrospective)

Time has not dimmed the shock value of the seminal classic from director Tobe Hooper, based on the same real-life Ed Gein case that inspired PSYCHO. Only granted a certificate from the British Board of Film Classification for its 25th Anniversary release in 1999, this highly influential scream-filled chiller tells the story of five Texas hippies who encounter a family of murderous cannibals. Hooper masterfully uses documentary-style realism, coupled with the horror of anticipation and suggestion, to take the terror factor into stunning and disturbing areas. Made on a micro-budget that adds to the harsh tone, this razor-sharp nightmare began the power tool cult and brought Gunnar Hansen's Leatherface to horror icon glory. But it's the brutal accumulative effect of Hooper's mater-of-fact direction that freezes the scalp and puts alarmed imagination on overdrive.

83 mins Director: Tobe Hooper USA 1974

Marilyn Burns - Sally
Gunnar Hansen - Leatherface
Allen Danziger - Jerry
Edwin Neal - Hitchhiker
Paul A. Partain - Franklin

3.15pm INTERVIEW WITH TOBE HOOPER.

The interview will be conducted by Total Film's deputy editor Jamie Graham. Total Film has regularly tagged THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE as 'The Greatest Horror Movie Ever Made' and could not be happier to welcome Tobe Hooper to FrightFest.

5.30pm ISLE OF DOGS (World Premiere)

Darius is the gang boss from hell, a deadly bastard and the last man you'd cross. So when he discovers his young Russian bride Nadia is sleeping with Rilry, a small time crook, he makes him an offer he can't refuse. Kill or be killed. In the tradition of LONDON TO BRIGHTON, an unflinching exploration of just what people will do to survive. Written by Sean Hogan and director Tammi Sutton (the upcoming WELCOME TO GRAVELAND starring Danny Trejo and Vinnie Jones), comes a barking Brit body count horror.

90 mins Director: Tammi Sutton UK 2010

Edward Hogg - Riley
Barbara Nedeljakova - Nadia
Andrew Howard - Darius
Gwilym Lee - Block
Stuart McQuarrie - Billy

It was directed by Norbert Moutier, a French journalist, under the name N.G. Mount. There's a bunch of well known journalists in the film too, especially Jean-Pierre Putters, creator of Mad Movies (The oldest & best French Horror magazine since its creation almost 40 years ago ).
It was a VHS-only release, and even though Norbert Moutier has been asked a million times about a DVD reissue, it's nowhere to be found as of yet.
Honestly, the movie is beyond wackness (lol)... There's little to no plot, except a weird love affair between Ogroff & one of his victims (Similar to Stretch and Leatherface in TCM2)... But it's so fuckin' cheesy that you can't hate this movie!

I dunno man, I don't find that hard rock stuff complimenting serious movies in the horror genre.

Twisted child-like music box themes seem to do the trick for me.

From the trailer, it looks pretty faithful to the original.

And I knew the girl from Kick-Ass was going to be the vampire in it.

First review of I Spit On Your Grave remake. Sounds surprisingly decent and effectively brutal.
The notoriety of Meir Zarchiג€™s original I Spit on your Grave speaks for itself, and basically if youג€™re aware of what that film is about (how could you not if youג€™re a genre fan), then you know precisely what this remake is about. Nothing about the premise has been changed much. So keep that in mind before you decide to watch it, and perhaps more importantly, keep in mind who you will be watching it with. This isnג€™t one to spring on the in-laws after a Sunday dinner. Like the original ISOYG, this new execution of it is harsh, nasty, mean, and violent as all hell.

Before I get into the review, Iג€™ll offer my stand on this remake situation. Remakes of 70ג€™s and 80ג€™s horror flicks are a major point of contention these days, and Iג€™ll be the first to admit that I was (and still sometimes am) on the anti-side of this whole arguably needless current. But over time, Iג€™ve seen a few remakes that I really dug. My favourite was the outstanding Toolbox Murders remake. I thought The Crazies was decent and I have to give begrudging props to Dawn of the Dead 2004 because even though it wasnג€™t the best horror movie Iג€™ve seen by a long shot, it was fun to watch. I have also seen the lousy Friday the 13th and Elm Street remakes, so I know how bad and annoying they can be.

From my standpoint, ISOYG 2010 sits squarely on the good side of remakes. Very good, in fact. I should clarify that by ג€œgoodג€ I mean well executed, punishing, and viciously rewarding. If youג€™ve got the stomach for this kind of thing, and you can endure the horribly unpleasant and drawn-out rape/degradation scene, youג€™ll be ratcheted into a headspace that is screaming for retribution. The bad guys in this movie are so despicable that you will have absolutely no qualms with seeing them get what is coming to them.

The plot is simple. City girl Jennifer rents a cabin in the woods to get some peace and to focus on her latest writing project. Sheג€™s attractive, friendly, sophisticated, basically a polar-opposite to the backwoods losers she unfortunately happens upon at a gas station. The hoods take a dislike to her right away and decide to take out their narrow minded hatred against city-gals on her by gang-raping her.

That whole rape portion of the movie is just awful to watch, so be warned. I suppose this is where the discussion ensues as to whether this type of thing is okay to view as entertainment on any levelג€¦ obviously taking pleasure in seeing a depiction of a rape is totally wrong. It was weird watching this sequence in the theatre, because I heard some people giggling during portions of the rape stuff. I canג€™t relate to that at all. Maybe that tittering was coming from a nervous place, that reflexive laughter that slips out of some people when they are extremely uneasy and canג€™t channel an appropriate response. I would certainly hope so.

Anyway, once this brutality is meted out, our heroine is led away to be killed and dumped in the river. Her body ends up in the water, but the hoods are unsure if she is dead. Theyג€™re stuck trawling the riverbank hoping to find her corpse so any evidence can be destroyed. As time goes by and nothing comes up, they sink back into their miserable ugly trailer trash lives and assume Jennifer is a goner.

Well guess whatג€¦ she comes back. And boy does she have some gruesome master-plans to make these creeps suffer and die! Her gradual return from the woods is the turning point in the film, the part where I started to loosen up a little and slowly accept the cheap but effective shock value of the narrative. It would be really silly to compare this in any substantial way to One Flew Over the Cuckooג€™s Nest, but I will briefly just to make a quick point: is there a viewer out there who didnג€™t feel a rush of gleeful vindication when Nurse Ratched got strangled by R.P. McMurphy?

That kind of satisfaction ensues in the ISOYG remake over a series of epic revenge set pieces that are way over the top and sadistically creative. Mentions of ג€œSawג€ came up after the screening in relation to these Grand-Guignol slaughter-scenes, and I guess fair enough, but for me itג€™s a different effect when you really, justly want to see vile characters pay for their viciousness and lack of mercy through agonizing tortuous dispatchings. To me, thatג€™s a lot different than with a lot of the other generic torture porn films, where you are stuck seeing lame characters you are supposed to be on side with in some way getting surgically greased and butchered on film. Here, you can feel good about it. I really liked last yearג€™s The Horseman for similar reasons.

A big part of that satisfying ג€œgoodnessג€ in the cumulative effect of ISOYG 2010 comes from the performance of Sarah Butler as Jennifer. You canג€™t help but feel deeply sorry for her for what she goes through over the duration of the rape sequence. This type of performance is not easy ג€“ itג€™s the kind of thing where the wrong kind of scream or a little under/overdone nuance can ruin the entire movie. Butler is a genuine talent and carries the film well. She is equally effective when she returns to stalk, menace, and cut down her attackers ג€“ sheג€™s got that merciless head-down stare thing going on, and she does it perfectly. You will love seeing her get the bad guys in this flick.

This is an exploitation film, unapologetically so. Keep that in mind and youג€™ll be able to walk the tightrope and get through this grueling movie experience without feeling too morally bankrupt inside. Did it work as a rape/revenge movie? Absolutely. Was it shocking? Yes (a guy at the screening I was at fainted  , so again I reiterate to be careful who you decide to watch this with!!). Does it raise questions about our inner cravings for violent justice? Sorta, but in that simplistic Death Wish way. Nothing new there. We all know rape is very, very bad.

But ultimately, was it a good horror movie? Yes! It was great!

And was it as good as the original ISOYG? I havenג€™t seen the original in many years and only have fragmented memories of it, so I canג€™t say. Some people I saw the 2010 version with said the remake is definitely better. Meir Zarchi executive produced ISOYG 2010, so it wasnג€™t done without his blessing or involvement. He was at the screening I went to and he is very happy with the outcome.

The movieג€™s promo tagline is ג€œItג€™s date nightג€. Well, Iג€™m definitely a cheap date for ISOYG 2010!

It's been silly for a minute now. Dudes need to stop dropping these half-assed remakes and come with some new shit. I don't care if these films have the original directors' seals of approval. I'd rather see a wack but new movie by the original directors than an "updated re-imagining" by somebody else.

When it comes to movies, I don't usually pay that much attention to reviews or criticism, but the level of praise for this film by various film sites are at polar opposites to much of the hate it's gotten in comments sections, even claiming the praise is falsely generated by the people involved with the film.

Personally, I loved the movie and worth checking out if you're into psychological thrillers.

[quote]Prepare to be corrupted and depraved once more as Nucleus Films releases the definitive guide to the Video Nasties phenomenon ג€“ one of the most extraordinary and scandalous eras in the history of British film.

For the first time ever on DVD, all 72 films that fell foul of the Director of Public Prosecutions are featured with specially filmed intros for each title in a lavish three-disc collectorג€™s edition box-set, alongside a brand new documentary - VIDEO NASTIES: MORAL PANIC, CENSORSHIP AND VIDEOTAPE, directed by Jake (Doghouse) West.

Producer Marc Morris, co-author of Art of the Nasty and Shock Horror: Astounding Artwork from the Video Nasty Era comments: "Hopefully, every true movie fan will want this in their collection".

Disc One presents the 39 titles which were successfully prosecuted in UK courts and deemed liable to deprave and corrupt. These included: Absurd, Cannibal Holocaust, The Driller Killer, I Spit on Your Grave, Nightmares in a Damaged Brain, Snuff & Zombie Flesh-Eaters.

Disc Two presents the 33 titles that were initially banned, but then subsequently acquitted and removed from the DPPג€™s list. These included: Death Trap, Deep River Savages, The Evil Dead, Human Experiments, The Toolbox Murders & Zombie Creeping Flesh

Both discs can be viewed either as a non-stop trailer show, or with newly-filmed introductions from a wide range of acclaimed media academics and notable genre journalists. Each disc is preceded by a brief introduction by cult horror presenter Emily (my sig) Booth.

Disc Three This era-defining documentary features interviews with filmmakers Ruggero Deodato (Cannibal Holocaust) Neil Marshall (The Descent, Doomsday), Christopher Smith (Severance, Black Death) and MP Graham Bright as well as rare archive footage featuring James Ferman (director of the BBFC 1975-1999) & Mary Whitehouse. Taking in the explosion of home video, the erosion of civil liberties, the introduction of draconian censorship measures, hysterical press campaigns and the birth of many careers born in blood and videotape, Westג€™s documentary also reflects on the influence this peculiar era still exerts on us today.

The documentary is due to be screened at this year's Frightfest festival which takes place in London's Leicester Square over the August bank holiday weekend. More info here http://www.frightfest.co.uk/09films/videonasties.html

Extras include a gallery of original video company idents and extensive gallery of lurid cover art for every video nasty.

Will check this out tonight

Not a bad flick.

A bit slow paced, but I enjoy flow paced movies.

That looks pretty cool, reminds me of the british horror movie Mum & Dad but on a religious angle.

Finally watched Pontypool. Aside from a few silly scenes during the second half, it's an excellent and refreshingly unique take on the zombie sub-genre.

Blood River isn't really a horror film but it's worth checking out for sure.

Cannibal Girls
Canada 1973. Director: Ivan Reitman
Cast: Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Ronald Ulrich, Randall Carpenter, Bonnie Nelson, Mira Pawluk

REMASTERED IN HD! A CLASSIC OF CANUXPLOITATION! ► A formative feature in the crazed canon of Canuxploitation gets a remastering and re-launch! Cannibals Girls, an early feature from Meatballs and Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, dates from the shock-and-sleaze 1970s/80s heyday of B-moviemaking in the Great Weird North, a Golden Age of trashy Canuck cinema only starting to get its due from critics and cultists (and which, not incidentally, produced one bona fide world-class master, David Cronenberg.) Eugene Levy and Andrea Martin, both pre-SCTV fame, play a couple on a romantic getaway. Stranded in a remote Ontario town, they stumble into a nightmare involving a sinister reverend and a trio of dangerously seductive young women who take the term ג€œman-eaterג€ a trifle literally. U.S. exploitation experts American International Pictures picked up Cannibal Girls and were responsible for its loopiest grindhouse gimmick: the warning bell that, in advance of the gory parts, alerts squeamish viewers to close their eyes! This HD remastering from the original 35mm film was overseen by Canadian pop-cult documentarian Ron Mann (Comic Book Confidential, Grass, Tales of the Rat Fink) and his boutique distribution company FilmsWeLike. ג€œCharming, inadvertently goofy and plenty gory . . . Equal parts slasher film, winking comedy, soft-core porno and Gothic spookfestג€ (CBC.ca). ג€œPurposefully trashy and surreal . . . One of the sleaziest Canadian B-movie concoctions of its era . . . Essential viewingג€ (Canuxploitation.com). Colour, HDCAM. 84 mins.

Program Update: Warning! There is no warning bell! Scary gory creepy parts arrive unannounced!

FilmsWeLike, the Canadian company responsible for the HD remastering (from the original 35mm reels) of Cannibal Girls, has informed us that, contrary to information previously provided, this (original Canadian) version of the film does not include the warning bell that was later added by the filmג€™s U.S. distributor, American International Pictures.

Viewers are advised that they watch the film at their own risk. Pacific Cin

I've never even heard of it, but it sounds like a must-see. I mean, Reitman-directed cannibals, c'mon. What more do you need to hear?

Think there was a discussion about Cannibal Girls on this forum a while back.

Anyhow, there's a string of big horror DVDs headed this fall and this is one of them.
