so now that demonoid is dead
I'm considering going back to USENET which I haven't used since I was a teenager in the 90's to download still photographs of naked women
What is the best news site / programs to use to get the goods.
I heard there is a manhunt in Mexico for the management of Demonoid. Interpol is investigating in like 5 different countries or something.
Torrents are done I think, help a brother out.

From what I've heard they've been under the same type of DDOS attacks that led up to Demonoid's servers being seized and their management being tracked down by interpol.alpha wrote:thepiratebay
I'm looking to fly under the radar a bit.
how much a year do you drop on them though? I fully think its worth it now as my ISP is a fucking narc I thinkSigma wrote:For Usenet I use Giganews as the service provider, Newsleecher as my Usenet client, and for searches I use Newzbin and Binsearch.
Everything I mentioned apart from Binsearch costs money, but it's far better than using torrents.
Sigma, I'm considering getting into Usenet as well (since I'm getting sick and tired of these private trackers with their outrageous demands).I pay $25 a month for unlimited bandwidth. Giganews are one of the most expensive Usenet providers, but their service has been rock solid for me, so given the amount I download I don't mind paying.
I'm a pretty heavy user: -
Once of the things Demonoid was great for was ebooks and rare movies. Is this something that's easy to find through this channel?
If it is the case, I'm switching too....

It's hard to say man. It really depends what you're after, cos the one advantage torrent sites have is that they can be specialised which will attract users that want to share files of that particular type. Usenet is more like a mad dumping ground for files of all types.gallax wrote:Sigma, I'm considering getting into Usenet as well (since I'm getting sick and tired of these private trackers with their outrageous demands).

Some of the Usenet providers offer a free trial. Giganews offers a 14 day free trial for instance, so you can give it a go and see what you think. There's a bit of a learning curve with it, because it's like learning how BitTorrent works for the first time, but for me it's my primary download method. If I can't find something on Usenet I'll Google for links on blogs, then torrents are a last resort.
The main advantages of Usenet: -
1. With a good provider you'll max out your connection and it's download only - there's no uploading or ratio to maintain, which also makes it more secure.
2. Once files are uploaded to Usenet, they're accessible for however long the retention of your Usenet provider is. For example, Giganews currently offers 1,470 days of retention so if I uploaded something today you could still grab it in 4 years' time. With torrents it relies on seeds/peers, so a torrent can die at any time.
3. There's a huge amount of content available of all types.
The main disadvantages: -
1. It's not free.
2. Some blogs and torrent sites will offer things that are not on Usenet (although the reverse is also true).
Re: so now that demonoid is dead
Thanks....nothing's perfect, I guess. But if I'm gonna spend some bucks on this, I want to be able to find what I'm looking for. Most of the time, I'm looking for e-books, older movies and I stay away from the 0day stuff. I'll give the trial a whirl, and see how I like it.

Is this Usenet thing full of virus and fakes like Pirate Bay?
Re: so now that demonoid is dead
Yep.MIKEY wrote:Is this Usenet thing full of virus and fakes like Pirate Bay?
Usenet isn't moderated at all really, so anyone can dump any shit on there. I wouldn't get cracked software off there, but then I wouldn't get it from a torrent site either. As for movies/music, there are fakes, but with a bit of experience of searching they become easy to spot and some Usenet search engines will mark password protected files.

I use Supernews with NZBMatrix. I built a HTPC and threw XBMC on there. I use SABnzbd to download all my shit, and with Sick Beard it grabs all my shows automatically. Just cut the cable too.

^ I have a similar setup. Best part is that you can manage everything from your phone/tablet.
Re: so now that demonoid is dead
FAZER, how long have you been using Supernews and how reliable have you found the service to be?
I just signed up for the 3 day trial and it seems great and it's nearly a third of the price of Giganews, but I don't want to make the switch if it's not going to offer a rock solid service.

I have never had a problem with Astraweb Usenet or NZBmatrix at all. Just buy a good service and you don't have to worry about it. Everything I have ever downloaded has been clean.MIKEY wrote:Is this Usenet thing full of virus and fakes like Pirate Bay?

Re: so now that demonoid is dead
Just dug out an old email a pal sent me to school me on newsgroup stuff, pretty much spelt it out for me as a total novice. Find it far better than torrents, hope it helps:deepfriedjellol wrote:how the hell do you learn about using this shit and what the fuck do you need to get started??
with newsgroups ...... you need the client .... (I recommend 'Altbinz' .. free to download) ...
THEN ... instead of Torrent files ... u need NZB files!!!!!! the only thing here is that you have to PAY to use the websites ..... but its a one off payment only .. like , to become a 'premium member' ..... I think I paid £5 to 2 websites .....
Main one for films / music / software is www.nzbmatrix.com ...... if u need filth I wld recommend www.gingadaddy.com ;)
ok ....
now ... in the NZB client (Altbinz) there is a section where you need to put your newsgroup provider account details .....
there are many providers but most do a monthly subscription ... the one I use allows you to purchase 'blocks' instead ... I think 200gb is about USD 27.00)
the website for thjis is ... http://usenet-news.net/ so ... u set up an account & pay via paypal ..... ... then u will have a userID like 'whatever@usenet-news.com' and a password .........
also, in that website, look @ the FAQ and u will see the server names ...... u will need to enter this into Altbinz ,.,.. so .. server name & username & pswrd ....
they have SSL servers for extra security if you want to use them ... just read it carefully and check which ports to open (sounds complicated but wen ur doing it its a piece of p!ss)
once thats in ur Altbinz client ... and u log onto the NZB file sites ... its just like bittorrent EXCEPT ... that is should use ALL of ur bandwidth .... so no waiting to build up ur connections to seeds& leechers ....
DISCLAIMER!!!!!! until I went onto Virgin 50mb ... I used to get throttled @ peak times .......
u mite want to check ur ISP's policy on this crap .....
my advice .... download overnight!!!
lots of things come RAR'd (i hope u know wot thios is ... basically a badboy version of ZIP'd ... if u aint got it ... go www.rarlabs.com ... its free)
wen looking on the nzb websites ... i would type in what I wanted ... select the category (ie. movies / muisic) and then sort by AGE ...... go for the most recent ... check peoples comments in case something important comes up .......
Re: so now that demonoid is dead
My friend helped me set mine up, and he uses Supernews so that's what I use as well. I don't have any experience with any other services, but Supernews hasn't given me any problems at all. Very satisfied.Sigma wrote:FAZER, how long have you been using Supernews and how reliable have you found the service to be?
