Re: Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire
I dont think the hipster route is getting exquire new fans.
He need to just keep it raw.

Re: Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire
Hum yeah El-P was like one of my favorite producer around 97-99. He was so raw. Every new track or remix was pushing the boundaries a little further. After Cold Vein he went through the motions.Myjah wrote:If you lost confidence in El-P at Fan Dam did you ever really have any confidence in him in the first place? Sounds kinda stupid.BadLT wrote:Of course it's conjecture. But I clearly see a before/after type of situation due to the co-flow break up. The Cold Vein is still OK in my book, but Fan Dam is where I lost my confidence in El-P. Basically I think everything he has done after Cold Vein is overproduced, feels forced and is a mess. I miss the simplicity and effectiveness of tracks like collude/intrude or the fire in which you burn. That shit was raw.B. Ware tha Siniq wrote:BadLT wrote:Post Co-Flow El-P suffers from overproduction syndrome. His peak as a producer is Little Johnny. Me thinks. I have the strong feeling that DJ Mr. Len was a lot more than just a scratches adder. He must have had a lot to do with the raw almost organic hip-hop vibe that was Co-Flow's appeal in the first place. El-P as a solo producer is more on the mechanical/industrial side of things. Which is really hit or miss as far as i'm concerned.
This is really overly-simplistic. Even if you prefer Co-Flow production to Fan Dam, ISWYD, Cold Vein, etc. And your assertion on Len's production influence, while it might possibly have a hint of merit, is total conjecture. El-P has had a hell of a production career post Little Johnny... Len and Juss have both tried their hands behind the boards, and neither of them have shown anything that suggests a Funcrusher Plus or Little Johnny level of skill. Although I do like that first Len album. There has been a pretty subtle arc over El-P's career from sample-heavy production to keyboard based production. He's just on an end of the spectrum right now that a lot of boom-bap fanatics aren't really down with. I do agree that this beat as well as the stuff on Cancer4Cure is less chaotic or sample-based than anything he'd done before, but it's not like this happened overnight.

In what way at all is he going 'the hipster route'? Retarded.Sebastion Shaw wrote:I dont think the hipster route is getting exquire new fans.

Also, can ya'll start a new thread if you're gonna bicker about wether El-P fell off a decade ago? Better yet, don't, anyone who's of the opinion that post-Cold Vein El is worse than pre-CV doesn't have opinions worth listening to.

The video (and remix) that more or less broke him featured Despot, El-P, Das Racist, and Danny Brown, among other moves that aim directly or indirectly at hipster tendencies.Kony Montana wrote:In what way at all is he going 'the hipster route'?
If anything, eX has done a better job than most at balancing the handful of collectives that constitute his fan base.

Re: Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire
How is doing a remix with rappers you know at all a 'move aimed directly at hipster tendencies? Please cite a single example of said moves aimed hipster tendencies; both direct and indirect moves are acceptable, though equally nonsensical.Captin Planit wrote:The video (and remix) that more or less broke him featured Despot, El-P, Das Racist, and Danny Brown, among other moves that aim directly or indirectly at hipster tendencies.Kony Montana wrote:In what way at all is he going 'the hipster route'?

Re: Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire
I guess I'm thinking more along the lines that eX's eccentricities (raps over every type of production, likes strippers and comic books, wears glasses and Fargo hats on stage, does collabs with Das Racist and Gucci Mane) are enough to have the hipster community trying to prove their allegiance to him, similar to Danny Brown, than eX or his label or management specifically targeting the hipster community. Which isn't rare or new. I'm just saying the hipster world and all of its forces are more likely to rally behind eX than Roc Marciano. But nowadays, who knows. B. Ware made a good point about the need for critics to have more voluminous exposure to rap records across the board if they're going to make it a point to stay abreast of artists like Troy Ave, Bronson, eX, etc.

Okay, next question is how/why a pandering audience of the 'hipster community' has any effect on how you listen to an artists music/matters at all period.
also lol at saying a gucci mane feature attracts hipsters... maybe in 2008

Re: Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire
The Gucci mention was the contrast to the hipster preference.
And I'm not talking about how this affects how I listen to him, I'm talking about the stock he has among various bands of listeners, the hipster crowd among them.
This is stupid.
Both the new mixtape and EP proves he's got great things ahead of him. I was surprised that the major label influence shaped his sound in the best way possible.

He mentioned he used to be called Tru-Gizzy Da Great. Here's what used to be his soundclick. I have not heard "Revolving Door" yet. I'm pretty sure salutations has made the rounds already.
