Your Top 5
No this isn't product placement for Chris Rock's new movie, though I'm not sure if its a movie or just a documentary or whatever but I do see chillin in the cut.
Props to Chris for putting Scarface in 5 tho.
As of now, 11/6/14 top 5 dead or alive.

Re: Your Top 5
notice how a lot of these older dudes, like even in the Chris Rock scene (which might be fabricated since it is a scene from a movie),
usually have their top 5 include:
-rappers that were considered amazing before 1989, but have yet to make an amazing album since 1995 at the latest
-some collection of Tupac, Biggie, Jay-Z and Nas.
also note that those last four rappers are two groups of rappers that beefed with each other, and pretty much
were involved in the biggest, most advertised beefs in rap history, regardless of how interesting they might have actually been in comparison to other historic rap beefs.
so, it's like "famous beef rapper? better put him on the list" regardless of their catalog.
rappers that i've listened to the most repeatedly since 2010 and still peep music for in 2014
1) A$AP Rocky (95% of that being LiveLoveA$AP; I still listen to that every month.)
2) Big K.R.I.T
3) Curren$y
4) Earl Sweatshirt
5) Lil Ugly Mane
(honorable mention to Spark Master Tape and Lil B, whom I've given heavy rotation to but Lil B got boring to me after 2011 or so, and Spark I only got into over the last year and a half or so.
I've even gotten tired of Big K.R.I.T since King Remembered In Time, but he gets on the list due to how many times I've listened to KRIT Wuz Here.)
note that all those rappers are mediocre at best (Earl's the best rapper in that list), but either produce well or choose good beats.
in this day and age, i'll take a mediocre rapper with dope beats over a lyrically competent rapper over some wack beats.
(hell, even MMLP2 had some multi madness, but wack beats everywhere.)
top 5 rappers I listened to when I first got into rap (1985-1990)
1) Run DMC
2) Fat Boys
3) Beastie Boys
4) LL Cool J
5) Eric B. and Rakim
5 albums from before 2014 that I heard before 2014 and still listen to in 2014
1) A$AP Rocky - LiveLoveA$AP
2) Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - E 1999 Eternal
3) Young Jeezy - The Recession
4) Cam'Ron - Purple Haze
5) Freddie Gibbs - ESGN
there's so much new stuff to catch up to, i rarely ever listen to old albums in full anymore.
nobody will list Tame One, either.

Ice Cube belongs on that list, but I'm sick of him. I would also replace two of them with E-40 and Mac Mall (because they are the GOATs), but I don't want to get e-lynched.

Re: Your Top 5
and oh yeah, Chris Rock pulled the Scarface anomaly, which was cool, and Scarface has an amazing and lasting catalog to this day,
but would it be too much thinking that ultimately Willie D is what made the Geto Boys sell records?
Dude said some outright outrageous and offensive things that would have me hitting rewind because I found them amusing.
I wouldn't be surprised if Grip It! could've got on their first label without Rubin if it wasn't for Willie D's raps.

Actually want to read all the eminently bannable posters' lists (Wicked, Employee, Bender) and Phila's. I also want someone to challenge my Schoolly D pick, so I can curse them.
Props to Larry for including Mystikal. In my Top 10 probably.

I tried to find a way to squeeze MF Grimm in, but he just misses the cut.
This wasn't too tough to come up with because all of these dudes have such extensive quality discogs. Andre 3000 was considered too, but I don't revisit Kast albums as much as I used to.

MY PERSONAL, CURRENT "TOP FIVE" GOAT-LEVEL RAPPERS: Marciano, Andre Martel, Daveed Diggs, Gunplay, Homeboy Sandman
MY PERSONAL, CURRENT "TOP 5" GOAT-CERTIFIED RAPPERS: MC Ren, Ice Cube, Big Daddy Kane, Saafir, GZA

Re: Your Top 5
It's amusing, bordering on hilarious, that you actually think in your own mind that the position you've staked out is a smaller piece of a much larger UNORTHODOX REBEL LIFESTYLE. Schoolly D in your listicle is safer than having twelve of Roc Marciano's imaginary Kevlar seatbelts securing your penis to your uterus.Versive wrote:I also want someone to challenge my Schoolly D pick, so I can curse them.
You are not a Thought Rebel; you're a moist palm.

Nas, Ghostface, and Jay are the top 3.
The last two spots are some combination of Andre 3000, Slick Rick, Rakim, Cube, Prodigy, and a few others I'm forgetting. Fence-sitting.

4/5 make their own beats, so I guess that's a really important thing for me when it comes to rappers defining a sound and niche for themselves that sets them apart.
